What it is
Qwen2.5 is a generation of Alibaba's Qwen large language model family, released on 19 September 2024. It is a set of dense, decoder-only language models, which means every parameter takes part in each computation and the model generates text one token at a time from left to right.[1] The family also includes specialised models for code and mathematics.
What was released
The launch included 13 open-weight models. The general models were Qwen2.5 at 0.5B, 1.5B, 3B, 7B, 14B, 32B and 72B. The coding models were Qwen2.5-Coder at 1.5B, 7B and, later, 32B. The mathematics models were Qwen2.5-Math at 1.5B, 7B and 72B.[1] The full Qwen2.5-Coder family, from 0.5B to 32B, followed in November 2024.[3]
By September 2024 Alibaba said it had released more than 100 open-weight models in the Qwen family, which had been downloaded over 40 million times.[3]
Training and context
The models were pretrained on up to 18 trillion tokens. Qwen2.5-Coder was trained on 5.5 trillion code-related tokens.[1] The models support up to 128K tokens of context and can generate up to 8K tokens, in more than 29 languages.[1] A token is the unit of text a model reads and writes, roughly a word or part of one, so the context length is the amount of text the model can take into account at once.
Licensing
Most of the open models are under Apache 2.0. The exceptions are the 3B model, which uses the Qwen Research license, and the 72B model, which uses the Qwen license.[1][3] Apache 2.0 allows commercial use, subject to conditions such as keeping copyright notices.
Benchmarks and hosted models
The Qwen team reported scores of 85 or more on MMLU, 85 or more on HumanEval, and 80 or more on MATH for the series.[1] These are the team's own reported figures for the series as a whole. Hosted API models, Qwen-Plus and Qwen-Turbo, were also offered through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio.[1]
Its place in development
DeepSeek's distilled DeepSeek-R1 models, released in January 2025, were based on Qwen2.5 and Llama 3 models.[4] Qwen2.5 was succeeded by Qwen3 on 29 April 2025.[2]
