Background
Runway was founded in 2018 by Cris Valenzuela, Alejandro Matamala and Anastasis Germanidis, who met while studying at NYU[3]. By the end of 2022 the company had reached the stage of announcing a Series C round[3]. Funding rounds are named in order — seed, then Series A, B, C and so on — and a company at the Series C stage usually already has a product in the market and is raising money to grow rather than to keep going.
What happened
On 29 June 2023 Runway announced $141 million in new funding[1]. The investors named in the announcement included Google, Nvidia and Salesforce[1][2].
The details
The money did not come with a new letter attached. It was an extension of the Series C round Runway had announced in December 2022[3]. An extension works much as the name suggests: instead of opening a fresh round, the company adds more capital to the one already under way, normally on terms close to the original ones.
Runway said the new capital would be used to scale in-house research and to expand headcount[3]. That is a statement about where the money goes — into research work inside the company and into hiring — rather than about products or acquisitions.
The extended round valued Runway at about $1.5 billion[2]. A valuation is not cash in the bank: it is the price investors agreed to pay for a stake, multiplied out across the whole company, and it moves as expectations change.
Why it matters
Two things stand out for anyone following how technology companies are financed.
The first is who is on the list. Google, Nvidia and Salesforce are large, established technology companies[1][2]. A round of this kind is not only a transfer of money; the names attached to it also become part of how the company is described afterwards.
The second is the timing. Runway had been founded in 2018[3] and the extended round valued it at about $1.5 billion five years later[2]. The gap between founding and a valuation of that scale is short, and the stated plan for the money — more research, more people[3] — suggests the company intended to spend it on building rather than on restructuring.
It is also worth being precise about the size of the announcement. The headline figure of $141 million[1] was not a new round added on top of the December 2022 one; it was more capital folded into a round that was already open[3], which is why reports describe the round as extended and give a single valuation for the whole company[2].
The announcement did not say how the new money would be split between research and hiring, and it did not set a timetable[3]. What it did establish, on 29 June 2023, was a public price for the company — about $1.5 billion[2] — and a public list of backers that includes three of the largest names in technology[1][2].
