Background
Stability AI was founded in 2019[3]. It is the company behind the image generation model Stable Diffusion[1]. In June 2024, Prem Akkaraju became chief executive[2].
What was announced
On 25 August 2026, Stability AI announced a $76 million Series B funding round[1]. A Series B is a later-stage venture round, usually raised once a company has a product on the market and wants to scale it; it is not the company's first outside money.
The investors named were Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures[1][2]. Three of them are recorded-music companies, one is a video-game publisher, one is the investment arm of a chip designer, and one is a venture fund. Stability AI did not disclose the valuation at which the round was raised[2]. Counting this round, the funding the company has raised since Akkaraju took over as CEO in June 2024 reached about $232 million[2].
What the money is for
The company said it would use the money for two things: building out its creative production product suite and expanding its professional services arm[3]. The first is the set of tools it sells to people who make media; the second is the part of the business that works alongside customers to put those tools into production.
Akkaraju described the round as an affirmation of the company's vision, one in which generative AI empowers every producer, musician and storyteller[3].
Partnerships with creative companies
The investor list overlaps with companies Stability AI has signed agreements with. The company struck partnerships with Universal Music and Electronic Arts in October, and with Warner Music in November[3]. Music labels and game publishers hold catalogs and franchises, and an agreement with them is a way for a model developer to work with material that is owned by someone else.
Why it matters
The composition of the round is unusual for a model developer. Rather than a list made up only of financial investors, most of the participants are companies from the music and game industries, whose products are built on creative work, plus a semiconductor venture arm[1][2]. For readers following generative AI, the round is a data point on how model companies are financed: increasingly by the industries that expect to use the models, and in this case by companies the developer already has partnership agreements with[3].
The round also says something about the company's own direction. The stated spending plans point at production tools and at services for professional customers rather than at research alone[3], which fits an investor base drawn from businesses that make and distribute music and games.
