Overview
Chris Urmson is co-founder and chief executive officer of Aurora, the self-driving company he leads[1]. In that role he has publicly described the two developments that most define the company: its acquisition of Uber's self-driving unit, announced on 7 December 2020[2], and the arrival of its driverless commercial trucks on public roads[3].
The company and the title
Aurora describes itself as founded in 2017 by experts in the self-driving industry[2]. Urmson is identified as co-founder and chief executive officer both in the company's December 2020 announcement about the Uber deal and in its regulatory filing[1][2]. Those are two different kinds of document, one addressed to the public and one to investors, and both carry the same title.
"Self-driving" here means a vehicle that drives without a person operating it: software reads the road through sensors and makes the steering, braking and acceleration decisions itself, rather than assisting a human who stays in control.
Acquiring Uber's self-driving unit
On 7 December 2020, Aurora announced that it would acquire Uber's self-driving unit, Advanced Technologies Group[2]. Urmson said the combination would put Aurora in the best position to deliver self-driving products for transportation and logistics[2]. The wording is worth noting: he framed the goal as transportation and logistics in general, not passenger rides alone.
Driverless trucks on public roads
Urmson has described the Aurora Driver, the company's self-driving system, as designed to drive an eighteen-wheeler down the highway without a driver[3]. In what he wrote in 2025, he said that Aurora's first driverless commercial trucks ran on public roads with no one behind the wheel[3]. He singled out two details about that run: there was no police escort, and the road was not closed[3]. In other words, the trucks were not moving through a staged demonstration carved out of ordinary traffic, but in it.
He also wrote that he rode in the truck's rear seat as a passenger, not behind the wheel[3]. And he gave a date for the milestone: the first day of commercial operations for the Aurora Driver was 27 April 2025[3].
Why it matters
Long-haul highway trucking is a narrow, repetitive slice of driving compared with city streets: lanes are marked, traffic moves in one direction, and pedestrians do not step out between parked cars. That is part of why highway trucking has been treated as an early target for removing the driver. A commercial operation also changes what a company is doing: rather than testing a prototype, it is running a service on public roads[3].
Urmson's way of announcing these steps has been to write them up himself, in the first person, with the operational details attached: who was in the vehicle, whether the road was closed, and what date operations began[3]. That habit makes his accounts one of the clearer records of how a self-driving company moves from research toward a commercial road operation, and it places him among the executives who have had to explain in public, in specific terms, what their systems actually do on a highway[2][3].
