Overview
Zhang Peng is the chief executive officer of Zhipu AI, the Chinese artificial intelligence company that also goes by the name Z.ai [1]. His time as CEO is tied to two developments that shape how the company is seen from outside: a steady run of large language model releases under the GLM name, and a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The job at a model company sits between research and the outside world — setting direction for what gets built, and representing the company to investors, partners and the public.
The GLM series
Under Zhang's leadership, Zhipu released a series of models running from GLM-4.5 to GLM-5.3 between July 2025 and August 2026 [1]. The dates attached to individual releases can be read from the model weights the company published through its zai-org account: the GLM-4.5 weights are dated 20 July 2025, and the GLM-5.3 weights are dated 25 August 2026 [4]. The company also documents the GLM family on its own website [5].
Publishing model weights is a specific choice. A large language model is, in practice, a very large set of numerical parameters adjusted during training on text; the weights are those parameters. A company that publishes them lets outside developers download the model and run it on their own hardware, instead of reaching it only through a paid interface. It also means the release can be inspected, adapted and reused by people who never sign a contract with the company. A line of models running from GLM-4.5 to GLM-5.3 is a cadence — successive versions, each following the last — rather than a single event.
The Hong Kong listing
On 8 January 2026, Zhang led Zhipu AI through its listing in Hong Kong, described as the first by a major Chinese large language model company [1][2][3]. The shares were priced at HK$116.20 each [2]. On the morning of the debut they traded at HK$126, up 8.43% [2]. TechNode reported that the stock opened at HK$120 and that market capitalisation exceeded HK$52.8 billion, about US$6.8 billion [3].
The mechanics are worth spelling out, because the numbers mean different things. The offer price of HK$116.20 is the price set before trading, when the company sells shares to investors to raise money. The first-day price is what buyers and sellers on the exchange agree on afterwards. Market capitalisation is the share price multiplied by the number of shares in existence — a measure of what the market says the whole company is worth at that moment, not money the company has raised.
Why it matters
A first listing of this kind is a public test. Until shares trade, the value of a company built around large language models is mostly a matter of private funding rounds; afterwards there is a daily price that anyone can read. Being described as the first major Chinese LLM company to list means Zhipu carried that test for its peers as well as for itself. What the listing shows about Zhang is narrower and clearer: he was the CEO who took the company through the process, alongside the model releases that preceded it [1][2][3].
