Overview
Bowen Zhou is an artificial intelligence researcher and research administrator. He is director and chief scientist of the Shanghai AI Laboratory, a position his Tsinghua faculty page lists him as holding from 1 April 2024[1]. His career so far runs through three quite different settings: a large multinational technology company, a Chinese internet and cloud business, and a public research institute.
Education
He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China, a master's degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a doctorate from the University of Colorado[1]. The three degrees span institutions in China and the United States, and his later work has been in industrial research rather than in a purely academic setting.
Years at IBM
Zhou worked at IBM from 2003 to 2017, and his roles there included chief scientist of the Watson Group[1][2]. Watson is the name IBM has used for its artificial-intelligence technologies and the products built on them; a chief scientist's job in such a group is to shape the technical direction of the work rather than to run the business side.
Fourteen years at one company covers several distinct phases of the AI field, from the statistical machine-learning era to the wave of deep learning that reshaped speech and language processing. That period at IBM is the longest single stretch in his public career record.
JD.com
In 2017 he moved to JD.com, where he worked until 2021 as president of JD Cloud & AI[1]. The title put him in charge of both the cloud computing business and the artificial-intelligence work at a large e-commerce and logistics company — a setting where AI is applied to search, recommendation, logistics and customer service at very large scale.
Shanghai AI Laboratory
Since 1 April 2024 he has been director and chief scientist of the Shanghai AI Laboratory, according to his Tsinghua faculty page[1]. In July 2024 the South China Morning Post reported that he had made his public debut as director of the laboratory[2]. The move took him from company positions into a publicly backed research institution, a type of organisation that has become a significant part of China's AI research landscape.
Recognition
His faculty page lists several professional honours: he is an IEEE Fellow, elected in 2019; he received the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Outstanding Contribution Award in 2020; and he became a Fellow of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence in 2021[1]. These are recognitions from professional bodies rather than commercial awards, and the years are given as listed on the page.
Where he sits in the field
Zhou's record is that of a researcher who has spent most of his career inside large organisations rather than in a single university department, and who has moved between corporate research, a cloud and AI business, and now a national-scale laboratory. That kind of path is common among senior AI figures in China, where the boundary between company labs and public research institutes is crossed in both directions. His tenure at the Shanghai AI Laboratory places him among the people responsible for setting the direction of a major public research effort.
