What Cursor is
Cursor is a code editor that places AI models at the centre of programming work. It is operated by Anysphere, Inc., the company named in the copyright line of cursor.com [7]. The company describes itself as an applied research lab working on automating coding, and states its aim as a human-AI programmer an order of magnitude more effective than any single programmer [2].
A conventional editor helps a person write code by hand: it highlights syntax, completes names, flags mistakes. Cursor keeps that surface but adds models that can read a project, write and edit files, and carry out multi-step tasks on the programmer's behalf. Much of the product's history consists of moving that assistance from single suggestions toward autonomous agents that work for extended stretches without supervision.
Funding and early growth
On 22 August 2024 Cursor announced a $60m Series A. The round came from Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, OpenAI, Jeff Dean and Noam Brown, and the announcement said the product had grown to more than 40,000 customers [1].
A second round followed on 16 January 2025: $105m in Series B funding from Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Benchmark and existing investors [2]. The same post gave a snapshot of scale — Cursor was used by millions of programmers as their editor of choice, its models edited over a billion characters per day, and recurring revenue had passed $100m [2].
Cursor 1.0
Version 1.0 shipped on 4 June 2025 and gathered several capabilities that had previously been separate or limited. Bugbot handled code review, the Background Agent was opened to all users, a Memories feature entered beta, MCP servers could be installed with one click through OAuth, and Jupyter notebooks were supported [4]. MCP is a standard way of connecting a model-driven tool to outside data and services; one-click installation with OAuth meant a user could authorise such a connection without hand-editing configuration files.
On 6 June 2025 the company announced $900m in funding at a $9.9bn valuation, with Thrive, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz and DST participating [3]. That post said annual recurring revenue had passed $500m and that more than half of the Fortune 500 used Cursor, naming NVIDIA, Uber and Adobe among its users [3].
Cursor 2.0 and Composer
Cursor 2.0 arrived on 29 October 2025 together with Composer, the company's first coding model built in-house. Cursor says Composer is 4x faster than similarly intelligent models and finishes most turns in under 30 seconds [5]. Version 2.0 also runs many agents in parallel, coordinating them through git worktrees or remote machines, and adds a native browser tool so an agent can test its own work [5]. Worktrees give each agent its own checkout of a repository, so simultaneous edits do not collide in a single working directory — a mechanical detail that starts to matter once several agents touch the same project at once.
Joining SpaceX
On 14 August 2026 Cursor was acquired by SpaceX, completing a process that began with a partnership in April 2026 [6]. The announcement says the product gains access to the largest fleet of GPUs in the world [6]. Training and serving coding models depends on GPU capacity, so the acquisition ties the editor's roadmap to an owner of that infrastructure.
Scope today
The product now spans Agents, Cloud, CLI, Code Review, Marketplace, Mobile and Automations [7]. The list marks how far the software has moved from a single window on a laptop: reviewing code, running agents away from the local machine, a command-line interface and other surfaces now sit alongside the editor. The stated target — a programmer an order of magnitude more effective than any single programmer — remains the frame the company puts around that work [2].
