LlamaIndex

LlamaIndex is an open-source Python library for building retrieval-augmented generation applications and AI agents on top of large language models. It began in late 2022 as one engineer's small indexing utility, GPT Tree Index.

Era Large models

What it is

LlamaIndex is an open-source Python library for building applications that connect large language models to data the model was not trained on. It is used mainly for two things: retrieval-augmented generation, usually shortened to RAG, and AI agents — programs in which a model chooses actions and calls tools rather than only answering a single question. The project lives in the run-llama/llama_index repository on GitHub, which was created on 2 November 2022, is released under the MIT license, and has roughly 53,000 stars.[1]

RAG is easiest to understand as a workaround. A language model knows only what was in its training data plus whatever text is placed in its prompt, and the prompt has a size limit. Retrieval-augmented generation splits the job in two. A retrieval step searches a document collection for the passages most likely to be relevant to the question; a generation step then asks the model to answer using those passages. The model never has to hold a whole archive at once — only the few pages selected for it.

How it started

LlamaIndex began as a side project in late 2022 by Jerry Liu, then a machine learning engineering manager at the AI safety startup Robust Intelligence and formerly a research scientist at Uber's autonomous vehicle division.[2] He built a small indexing utility and published it to GitHub in November 2022 under the name GPT Tree Index.[2]

The motivation was specific. GPT-3 could not work reliably with private or proprietary data, and its context window — the amount of text it can consider at one time — was only 4,096 tokens.[2] An index built over a document collection was a way to decide, at query time, which small pieces of a private corpus to put in front of the model.

Co-founder and company

Simon Suo, a former Uber colleague of Liu's who later worked at the autonomous-driving startup Waabi, joined LlamaIndex as co-founder.[2] The company was formally incorporated in April 2023, and the project was rebranded LlamaIndex.[2]

What the framework provides

As a framework, LlamaIndex supplies the pieces such an application needs in one place: data connectors that pull documents in from wherever they are stored, index structures that organise those documents so relevant fragments can be found again, query engines that take a question and return an answer assembled from retrieved fragments, and orchestration primitives for agents that need to call tools and chain several steps together.[2] Packaging them together matters because each piece is fiddly on its own — splitting documents into chunks, keeping track of where each chunk came from, and deciding how much retrieved text will still fit in the prompt.

Where it sits

LlamaIndex appeared early in the wave of open-source tooling built around RAG, starting as a one-person utility published in November 2022 and becoming an incorporated company by April 2023.[2] The MIT license and the repository's star count of roughly 53,000 indicate that a large number of developers have at least tried it.[1] It belongs to a set of frameworks that turned "put your own documents in front of a model" into a standard pattern, rather than something every team had to assemble from scratch.
