A coding agent from Cognition
Devin is an AI software engineer built by Cognition. The company announced it on 12 March 2024 in a post titled "Introducing Devin, the first AI software engineer", written by Scott Wu[1]. The framing in that post is collaborative rather than purely automatic: Devin is described as a tireless, skilled teammate equally ready to build alongside an engineer or to complete tasks independently for review[1]. That description sets out the two ways the system is meant to be used — as something an engineer works with side by side, and as something that takes a task away and hands back finished work.
Planning, memory and tools
According to the announcement, Devin's planning rests on advances in long-term reasoning and planning. That is what lets it plan and execute complex engineering tasks that require thousands of decisions[1]. Long-horizon work is the hard part of software engineering for a machine: a task is rarely one action but a chain of small choices, each depending on what came before.
The post also says Devin can recall relevant context at every step, learn over time and fix its own mistakes[1]. These three abilities address the same underlying problem — that a long task drifts unless the system keeps track of what it is doing, improves from what it has already tried, and notices when something has gone wrong.
Devin is equipped with the tools a developer already uses: a shell, a code editor and a browser, all inside a sandboxed compute environment[1]. Working inside a sandbox means the agent can run commands, edit files and look things up without acting directly on a live machine. It reports progress in real time, accepts feedback, and works through design choices together with the user[1]. Progress reporting matters for a system that may run for a long stretch: it lets a person follow the reasoning, step in early, and redirect the work before it finishes.
What the demonstrations showed
The announcement illustrated these capabilities with several demonstrations. In one, Devin read a blog post and then ran ControlNet on Modal to produce images containing concealed messages[1]. In another, it built an interactive website simulating the Game of Life, added features on request, and deployed the site to Netlify[1]. Both involve more than writing code: reading an outside source, setting up and running a model, or taking a project from first version to deployment.
Two further examples show how much setup the system handles on its own. As part of the SWE-bench benchmark, it solved a bug in logarithm calculations in the sympy Python algebra system, setting up the code environment itself[1]. And given only a link to a GitHub issue, it performs all the setup and context gathering needed; given only a link to a research repository, it can set up fine-tuning of a large language model[1].
Where it sits
The emphasis on setup is what separates this kind of system from an autocomplete tool. Much of the practical work in a codebase is environment work — installing dependencies, finding the relevant files, reproducing the problem — and the announcement presents Devin as handling that part without being walked through it.
Cognition's site now describes Devin more broadly: it states that Devin plans, writes, tests and ships production code on its own inside a customer's codebase and existing tools, and that it is deployed at some of the largest and most complex institutions in the world[2]. That is the company's own account of where the product stands. Taken together, the two descriptions trace the same idea from different angles — from a teammate that works alongside an engineer on a task, to a system that carries a change through planning, writing, testing and shipping inside the tools a team already uses.
