What it is
WorkBuddy (腾讯 WorkBuddy) is a desktop AI agent from Tencent, built for work done at a computer. An agent differs from a plain chat assistant in that it carries out a sequence of steps for the user, such as gathering information and drafting a document, rather than only answering a question. TechNode, a Chinese technology news site, described WorkBuddy as OpenClaw-like [1].
Origins
Tencent launched WorkBuddy on 9 March 2026, as reported by TechNode [1]. The product was first offered for use in China. In late May 2026 Tencent Cloud launched a version for global users, which TechNode reported on 29 May [2].
Key features
WorkBuddy can be installed locally on a computer without cloud deployment. It automates information retrieval, report generation and content drafting [1]. Local installation means the program runs on the user's own machine, so the work it does is done there rather than being set up on a company server.
Users can switch between several large models, including Hunyuan (混元), DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi and MiniMax [1]. This lets one agent be used with models from different companies, and the user chooses the model for each task.
The agent supports more than 20 skill packages. A skill package is a bundle of instructions and tools that teaches the agent how to perform a particular kind of task. WorkBuddy supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and is compatible with OpenClaw skills [1]. MCP is a common standard for connecting AI tools to outside software and data sources.
The global version adds remote task execution through Slack, Telegram, Discord and WeChat, so a user can send a task from one of these apps and have the agent carry it out [2]. Through MCP it connects to GitHub, Jira, Google Drive, Gmail, Notion and Slack [2]. It also includes more than 100 built-in expert roles, which are preset personas set up for common kinds of work [2].
Position in development
WorkBuddy is an example of a desktop agent that supports several models and uses the same skill and connection standards as other agent products. In July 2026 Tencent integrated its Hy3 model into WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy [3]. That update made WorkBuddy one of the products through which Tencent's own latest model reaches users, alongside the model choice the product already offered.
