What it is

Tencent is a Chinese internet company whose consumer products include QQ and WeChat. It is described as the world's largest video game vendor [1]. Its artificial intelligence work is organized around the Hunyuan model family, which Tencent first unveiled in September 2023 [2]. The model line was later renamed Hy [6].

Origins

Tencent was founded in November 1998 by Pony Ma (Ma Huateng), Zhang Zhidong, Xu Chenye, Charles Chen (Chen Yidan) and Zeng Liqing [1]. Its headquarters is Tencent Binhai Mansion, also called Seafront Towers, in Nanshan District of Shenzhen [1]. QQ launched in February 1999 under the name OICQ, and WeChat launched as Weixin on 21 January 2011 [1].

Tencent has been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 16 June 2004, under the code SEHK: 700. Pony Ma is chairman and chief executive, and Martin Lau is president [1].

Main features

For FY2025 Tencent reported revenue of CN¥751.8 billion and net income of CN¥224.8 billion, with 115,849 employees [1].

Its AI work has grown in several steps. On 7 September 2023 Tencent unveiled Hunyuan, its proprietary large foundation model, at its Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in Shenzhen, and offered it to enterprises through Tencent Cloud APIs [2]. In November 2024 Tencent open-sourced Hunyuan-Large, a mixture-of-experts model with 389 billion total parameters and 52 billion activated parameters. Tencent described it as the largest open-source Transformer-based MoE model at the time [3]. In a mixture-of-experts design, a router sends each input to a few specialized sub-networks, so only part of the model's total parameters works on any given token.

On the consumer side, Tencent Yuanbao, its AI assistant, launched on 30 May 2024. On 13 February 2025 it added DeepSeek-R1 as a model users could select [8]. Hunyuan 2.0, released in December 2025 with Think and Instruct versions and 406 billion total parameters, was integrated into Yuanbao and ima [9].

Place in the field

Tencent's model releases in 2026 came in quick succession. Hy3, an open-weight model with 295 billion total parameters and 21 billion active parameters, was released on 6 July 2026 and integrated into WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy, Yuanbao, Marvis and ima [6]. On 28 August 2026 Tencent released and open-sourced the Hy4 preview, a model with 770 billion total and 49 billion active parameters, less than two months after Hy3 [7].

Organizational changes have accompanied the model work. In December 2025 former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu was reported to have been named Tencent's chief AI scientist. He would report to president Martin Lau, lead large language model development and head a new AI Infrastructure Department in the Technology Engineering Group [4]. Tencent later dissolved its AI Lab and moved core research and development staff to the large language model department led by Yao [5]. In July 2026 Han Hu, head of multimodal understanding, reportedly resigned, and former OpenAI researcher Tian Yonglong was set to succeed him [5].

    On 21 March 2025 Tencent launched Hunyuan-T1, a deep-reasoning model offered on Tencent Cloud and priced against DeepSeek-R1.

  6. ReleaseTencent releases Hunyuan Turbo S, a fast-thinking model

    On 27 February 2025 Tencent released Hunyuan Turbo S, saying it replies faster than DeepSeek-R1. The model was offered through a Tencent Cloud API, and its weights were not released.

  7. UpdateTencent Yuanbao integrates DeepSeek-R1

    On 13 February 2025 Tencent's Yuanbao app added DeepSeek-R1 beside Tencent's own Hunyuan models, and within days it rose to second place on China's App Store free chart.
