What it is
Tencent Yuanbao, also known as Yuanbao or WeChat Yuanbao, is an AI assistant app developed by Tencent. It is based on Tencent's Hunyuan model.[1] The app offers search, chat, document processing and image generation.[1] An AI assistant app is a consumer product in which users chat with a language model to ask questions, draft text or get help with tasks.
It is available on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and the web, and as an official WeChat mini-program.[1] Its website is yuanbao.tencent.com.[1]
Origins
Tencent launched Yuanbao on 30 May 2024.[1] It was built on the in-house Hunyuan large model, and it supports Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English.[1] A long-text reading feature was added on 6 August 2024.[1]
Main features
Yuanbao's features include search, chat, document processing and image generation.[1] The long-text reading feature lets users work with lengthy text, and it was added on 6 August 2024.[1]
On 13 February 2025 Yuanbao integrated DeepSeek-R1, so users could choose between Hunyuan and DeepSeek models.[1] The Hunyuan-T1-Preview reasoning model was launched in Yuanbao in February 2025.[2]
HY 2.0 was integrated into Yuanbao in December 2025,[3] and Hy3 followed in July 2026.[4]
Place in the field
In early 2025 Yuanbao's ranking rose sharply. On 22 February 2025 it passed Doubao to rank second on China's Apple App Store free-download chart.[1]
Yuanbao has also had public incidents, which show that an assistant used by many people can produce outputs its maker did not intend. On 5 January 2026 users reported insulting replies from the app. Tencent said they came from a low-probability abnormal model output, not from humans.[1]
In February 2026 Yuanbao ran a campaign that offered 1 billion yuan in cash red envelopes. WeChat blocked the campaign's sharing links because they induced users to share. Yuanbao changed the mechanism, and WeChat lifted the restriction on 8 February 2026.[1]
