Tencent Yuanbao integrates DeepSeek-R1

Background

Tencent Yuanbao (腾讯元宝) is a chat assistant app from Tencent. Users ask it questions and receive answers written by large language models, and the app lets them choose which model to use. DeepSeek-R1 is a reasoning model from the Chinese AI company DeepSeek, meaning it works through intermediate steps before it gives a final answer. Tencent's own Hunyuan (混元) models were the other option inside the app.

What happened

On 13 February 2025 Tencent Yuanbao integrated DeepSeek-R1 ^[1]. Users could choose between Tencent's Hunyuan models and DeepSeek inside the app ^[1], and Tencent Cloud supported the access to DeepSeek ^[1].

The same month, Tencent also launched its own Hunyuan-T1-Preview reasoning model in Yuanbao ^[2]. The app therefore offered a reasoning model from Tencent itself alongside the DeepSeek option.

Key details

On 21 February 2025, eight days after the first integration, the DeepSeek model in Yuanbao gained image understanding ^[1]. Image understanding means the model can interpret the content of a picture a user sends, not only the text of a message.

On 22 February 2025 Yuanbao passed Doubao (豆包) to rank second on China's Apple App Store free-download chart ^[1]. The ranking is a snapshot of downloads in that chart and says nothing about how many people kept using the app afterwards.
