Tencent Hunyuan

What it is

Hunyuan is Tencent's first proprietary large foundation model. A foundation model is a large model trained on broad data, which can then be adapted to many specific tasks. Tencent positioned Hunyuan mainly as a model for businesses, and named Chinese-language processing as one of its main strengths ^[1][2].

Origins

Hunyuan's launch followed Tencent's Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) offering, introduced in June 2023 with more than 50 industry solutions across 20 industries ^[1]. Tencent unveiled Hunyuan on 7 September 2023 at its Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in Shenzhen ^[1]. TechNode reported the launch on 8 September 2023 as Tencent's entry into China's large language model race ^[3].

Main features

Tencent vice-president Jiang Jie said the model has more than 100 billion parameters and more than two trillion tokens of pre-training data ^[1]. Pre-training data is the large body of text a model learns from before it is adapted to particular tasks, and the size of that data is one measure of how much general language knowledge a model can absorb.

Tencent described the strengths of the model as Chinese-language processing, logical reasoning and task execution. The functions it named included image creation, copywriting, text recognition and customer service ^[1]. Enterprises in China could test the model, build applications through APIs on Tencent Cloud, and fine-tune it for their own needs ^[1]. Fine-tuning means continuing to train a pre-trained model on a narrower set of data so that it suits a particular kind of task.

At launch, Tencent said Hunyuan was already integrated into 50 of its products. They included Tencent Cloud, Tencent Marketing Solutions, Tencent Games, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Docs, Weixin Search and QQ Browser ^[1]. The target industries Tencent named were finance, public services, social media, e-commerce, transportation and games ^[1].

Place in the field

Hunyuan was presented as a model for enterprises. SCMP noted that a public chatbot built on it had not yet been released ^[2]. For readers, this distinction matters: the first Hunyuan release was a business platform that other companies could build on, rather than a consumer chat product.

The Hunyuan line, which Tencent later branded Hy, went on to include Hunyuan3D, the open-weight Hy3 released in July 2026, and the Hy4 preview released in August 2026 ^[4]. Later models in the family are covered in their own entries.
