What it is
On 6 May 2023 the Chinese speech-recognition and artificial-intelligence company iFlytek unveiled SparkDesk, a "cognitive large model" that the company positioned as its answer to ChatGPT in education and enterprise applications [1]. In iFlytek's own account, the same date is the official release of the iFLYTEK Spark Large Model, and the company lists seven core capabilities: text generation, language understanding, knowledge question answering, logical reasoning, math, coding and multimodal tasks [2]. The last of these means the model is meant to handle more than words — images, for instance — rather than working on text alone.
What was claimed at launch
Chairman Liu Qingfeng said at the launch that the model already outperformed ChatGPT in text generation, knowledge-based question answering and math [1]. He further said that after three rounds of key upgrades it would surpass ChatGPT in Chinese and match it in English by October 2023 [1]. Those comparisons were company claims and were not independently verified [1]. Caixin reported that SparkDesk was developed on Huawei's Ascend AI chips [1].
The "1+N" architecture and deployment
iFLYTEK described a "1+N" architecture: one general cognitive large model, together with an efficient training infrastructure, plus a set of industry versions for education, healthcare, automotive, human-machine interaction, office automation, translation and industrial sectors [3]. Liu said that a first batch of more than 3,000 enterprises from 36 industries would deploy the model [3]. Inside iFlytek's own business, the company said SparkDesk would be integrated into AI learning devices, the iFLYREC recording service, intelligent offices, smart automotive cockpits and digital employees [3].
Roadmap and later versions
Liu laid out a staged roadmap: real-time question-and-answer and stronger multi-turn conversation by 9 June, better coding and multimodal interaction by 15 August, and surpassing ChatGPT in Chinese by 24 October 2023 [3]. The October date was set as the target for that milestone [3]. The version line kept moving after launch, with V2.0 in August 2023, V3.0 in October 2023, V3.5 in January 2024 and V4.0 in June 2024 [2][4]. In September 2023 the model was opened to the general public after Chinese government approval of generative AI services [4].
Where it sits
SparkDesk arrived at a moment when Chinese technology companies were rushing out their own large language models and presenting them as domestic alternatives to ChatGPT. Its distinguishing features were the explicit focus on education and enterprise customers, the "1+N" split between one general model and many industry versions, and the reported use of Huawei's Ascend chips rather than imported hardware. Because the performance comparisons were announced by the company itself and were not independently checked [1], the launch is best read as a statement of intent as much as a measured result: the roadmap named concrete dates, and the later V2.0, V3.0, V3.5 and V4.0 releases show that the product line was continued and revised rather than launched once and left alone [2][4]. Opening the service to the general public in September 2023 moved it from an enterprise and demonstration product toward a consumer-facing assistant [4].
