What it is

Spark V3.0 is a version of the Spark large language model from iFlytek, a Chinese company known for speech and language technology. iFlytek released it at its developer festival on 24 October 2023.[1][2] A large language model of this kind works by predicting, piece by piece, what text should come next given what has already been written; a version number marks an iteration within a series rather than a different kind of system.

Why the date mattered

The launch date had been fixed months in advance. iFlytek had set it in May as the target date for surpassing ChatGPT in Chinese.[1] Naming both a date and a competitor ahead of time turns a product launch into a kind of public deadline: the comparison with a widely used model becomes part of the announcement itself, and the claim can be checked against a named rival rather than against nothing.

What the company said it could do

iFlytek said V3.0 outperformed OpenAI's GPT-3.5 in a Chinese-language context, beating it in six areas, among them text generation, logical reasoning, mathematics and coding.[1] These are the company's own comparisons rather than results from an outside evaluation. The four named areas cover much of what such models are commonly used for: drafting and editing text, working through problems in several steps, and writing or explaining code.

The computing platform and the industry models

The model was not the only thing announced that day. iFlytek and Huawei launched FlyingStar One, described as China's first fully domestic computing platform.[3] The machine behind it was described as a 10,000-card domestic cluster built with Huawei and enabled on 24 October 2023.[6] Training and serving a large model takes sustained computing power, usually from very large numbers of accelerator cards working together, so a cluster of that size is the infrastructure side of the same announcement.

Twelve industry-specific models were released with industry partners on the same day.[6] Models of this kind take a general-purpose system and adapt it to the vocabulary, documents and tasks of a particular sector.

Market reaction

On the day of the launch, iFlytek's shares hit the daily limit down — the maximum fall a stock is allowed in a single session, after which trading in it stops for the day.[4] In October 2023 the shares also fell 10% after Spark-powered devices drew backlash over content that reportedly criticised Mao Zedong.[5]

Place in the series

Spark V3.0 was succeeded by Spark V3.5 in January 2024.[6] That succession is the ordinary life cycle of a commercial model: versions follow one another within a year or so, each announced with comparisons to the previous one and to outside systems. V3.0 is best read as one step in that sequence — the point at which iFlytek made a public, dated claim about Chinese-language performance against GPT-3.5, and paired the software release with domestic hardware and a set of industry-specific variants.
