What it is
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a private biomedical research institution, founded in 1953. Its work is built around funding and supporting scientists who make discoveries that advance understanding of biology and human health.[1]
How it works
Rather than concentrating on a single campus or a single disease, HHMI invests in scientists at all career stages. The idea is to back people rather than narrow projects, so that researchers have room to follow questions where they lead.[1]
Alongside its support for individual researchers, the institute runs the Janelia Research Campus, located outside Washington, DC. Janelia is set up for scientific questions that need capabilities and time horizons beyond what university or industry labs could sustain — long-running, technically demanding work that does not fit neatly into conventional funding cycles.[1]
HHMI has also said it is pursuing the promise of artificial intelligence in the life sciences, through a programme listed as AI@HHMI. The institute further supports approaches to science education and public engagement, extending its work beyond the laboratory.[1]
Governance
HHMI operates under a board of trustees that meets four times a year. Trustees are elected to five-year appointments. The board works through five standing committees: Audit and Compensation, Education, Finance, Nominating and Governance, and Research.[1]
Where it sits in the research landscape
HHMI occupies an unusual place among biomedical funders: it is a private institution with its own research campus as well as a grantmaking role, and its stated aim is discovery-driven science across a scientist's whole career. Its combination of long-horizon support, a dedicated campus for ambitious projects, and an explicit interest in AI for the life sciences describes how one major private funder is organised around basic biology and human health.[1]
