Huawei Noah's Ark Lab
Huawei's artificial intelligence research centre, founded in 2012 and part of the company's 2012 Laboratories, with sites in China, Hong Kong, Europe and Canada and research spanning vision, language, search and recommendation, and decision-making.

What the lab is
Huawei's Noah's Ark Lab describes itself as Huawei's artificial intelligence research centre. Its website lists sites in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, London, Paris, Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton [1]. The lab says its mission is to make significant contributions to the company and society through innovation in artificial intelligence, data mining and related fields [1].
Origins and the name
According to the lab's own website, it was founded in 2012 [1]. Huawei's 2019 white paper on innovation and intellectual property describes it as the artificial intelligence research centre within Huawei's 2012 Laboratories [2]. That umbrella organisation dates from 2011, when the company says it consolidated its global research and development resources and established the 2012 Laboratories [2].
The white paper also explains the name: artificial intelligence is the "ark" in which Huawei intends to escape being submerged in the flood of data that a connected society will generate [2]. The lab's slogan makes a similar point in fewer words — "from big data to deep knowledge" [1]. Both formulations start from the same observation: connected devices produce far more data than people can read, and the value lies in turning that raw volume into something structured and usable.
How the research is organised
The lab says its research is driven mainly by long-term projects with major impact [1]. That is a different emphasis from work scheduled around product releases: a long-horizon project is judged by what it makes possible over years rather than by the next launch.
It lists model architecture and optimisation, time-series AI, collaborative intelligent optimisation, industry intelligence, device intelligence, sensing fusion and physical intelligence among its research areas [1]. In plain terms, model architecture and optimisation concerns how neural networks are built and trained; time-series AI deals with sequences of measurements ordered in time, such as sensor readings or demand figures; sensing fusion combines signals from several sensors; and physical intelligence concerns machines acting in the physical world rather than only on data.
The 2019 white paper offers a different cut of the same work: six sub-labs covering computer vision, natural language processing, search and recommendation, decision-making and inference, human-computer interaction and AI theory [2]. Computer vision is the branch of AI that extracts information from images and video; natural language processing does something comparable for text; search and recommendation systems decide what a user should be shown; decision-making and inference covers systems that choose actions; human-computer interaction covers how people and machines communicate; and AI theory is the mathematical groundwork underneath the rest.
Where it sits in Huawei's research
The lab's spread of sites — Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai, together with London, Paris, Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton [1] — puts it among corporate laboratories that recruit internationally instead of concentrating in one place. That arrangement is common among large technology companies: it keeps a research group close to universities and pools of specialist talent while leaving it inside the company whose products it serves. Within Huawei, the lab is one part of the 2012 Laboratories structure described in the white paper [2].
Read side by side, the lab's own list of research areas and the white paper's six sub-labs overlap in their emphasis on perception (computer vision, sensing fusion), on language, and on decision-making — an agenda that runs from raw signal through interpretation to action [1][2].
