What Informatica does
Informatica is an American software company based in Redwood City, California, whose core products are enterprise cloud data management and data integration[1]. In practice that means software that connects the many systems a large organisation runs — transaction databases, business applications, cloud data warehouses — and moves, cleans and catalogues the data so it can be used consistently across them. The company calls itself a leader in enterprise AI-powered cloud data management, and its portfolio spans data catalog, integration, governance, quality and privacy, metadata management and master data management[2].
Those are the unglamorous but necessary layers of enterprise computing. Governance and privacy set rules about who may use which data and for what purpose; quality checks whether records are correct and complete; master data management keeps one agreed version of entities such as customers, products or suppliers, so that different departments are not working from conflicting lists; metadata management records what data exists, where it came from and how it has changed. Integration is the plumbing that ties these together, and it is the part most organisations notice only when it fails.
Origins
Informatica was founded in 1993 by Gaurav Dhillon and Diaz Nesamoney and is based in Redwood City, California[1]. It listed on the Nasdaq under the symbol INFA in an initial public offering on 29 April 1999[1], at a time when enterprise software companies were coming to the public markets in large numbers.
Private ownership and return to the exchange
In April 2015 the investment firm Permira and CPP Investments announced a take-private of Informatica for approximately $5.3 billion, and the transaction was completed four months later; Microsoft and Salesforce Ventures invested as part of the deal[1]. Its stock ceased trading on the Nasdaq on 6 August 2015[1]. The company returned to public markets on 27 October 2021, relisting on the New York Stock Exchange at an enterprise value of about $10 billion[1].
Restructuring and the Salesforce deal
In November 2023 Informatica announced a restructuring to focus on cloud offerings and permanently laid off 10% of its workforce[1]. In April 2024 the Wall Street Journal reported that Salesforce was in advanced talks to acquire the company at a price below its $11 billion market capitalisation; that deal was abandoned[1]. A year later the two sides did reach agreement: in May 2025 Informatica agreed to be acquired by Salesforce for $8 billion, and the acquisition was completed in November 2025[1][2]. At the time of the deal Informatica worked with more than 5,000 customers across more than 100 countries and had a market capitalisation of $7.1 billion[3].
Where it sits in the industry
Informatica's history tracks a broader shift in enterprise software. Data integration began as a back-office tool for building data warehouses; as analytics and then machine learning came to depend on large volumes of combined data, the same functions — cataloguing, cleansing, governing, tracking lineage — became prerequisites for almost any data project. Companies that own that layer are therefore attractive to platform vendors that want to offer customers a complete path from raw records to models and reports. Salesforce had already been an investor at the time of the 2015 take-private, and its eventual purchase of the whole company in 2025 folded an independent data management specialist into a larger applications platform, ending more than three decades in which Informatica traded, privately or publicly, as a standalone business.
