Princeton University is a private research university in Princeton, New Jersey. It was chartered on 22 October 1746 as the College of New Jersey, and it settled in Princeton in 1756.[1] Its connection to artificial intelligence runs mostly through people who studied or taught there: seventeen Turing Award laureates have been affiliated with Princeton as alumni, faculty or researchers.[1]
Logic and the first doctorates in computation
Alan Turing studied at Princeton from 1936 and earned his PhD there in 1938 under Alonzo Church, with a thesis titled "Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals".[2] That work belongs to mathematical logic, the field from which the theory of computation grew: questions about what a formal system can prove turned into questions about what a machine can compute.
Two of the people who founded artificial intelligence as a named research field took Princeton doctorates in mathematics a little over a decade later. John McCarthy was a Proctor Fellow at Princeton in 1950, received his PhD in mathematics there in 1951, and stayed on as a Higgins Research Instructor before moving to Stanford in 1953.[3] Marvin Minsky went to Princeton after graduating from Harvard in 1950 and received his PhD in mathematics in 1954 with a thesis on neural-analog reinforcement systems.[4] In 1951, during his first year there, he built what MIT calls the first neural network simulator, known as SNARC.[4] Both men later became central figures at MIT and Stanford, so Princeton is one station in a longer route rather than the place where their AI laboratories were built.
ImageNet
Fei-Fei Li was an assistant professor at Princeton from 2007 to 2009, and she began developing ImageNet there in 2007.[5][9] The paper presented at CVPR 2009 was written by Jia Deng, Wei Dong, Richard Socher, Li-Jia Li, Kai Li and Li Fei-Fei, all from Princeton's Department of Computer Science.[6] The paper describes ImageNet as a large-scale hierarchical image database, that is, a collection of images organized into a hierarchy of categories rather than a flat list of labels.[6]
Networks, physics and later careers
John Hopfield of Princeton University shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with Geoffrey Hinton, for foundational discoveries enabling machine learning with artificial neural networks.[8] The prize recognised a line of work that began in physics and spread into how neural networks are built and trained.
Princeton also appears early in the careers of people who later led AI organisations. Dario Amodei, later co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, earned a PhD in biophysics at Princeton.[7]
Where it sits in the story
Read together, these connections cover several separate strands. Princeton is a place where mathematical logic was used to ask what computation is, where two founders of the field learned their mathematics and where an early neural simulator was built, where a large-scale image database was assembled, and where physicists worked on the principles behind neural networks. It is also a place people passed through: McCarthy left for Stanford in 1953, Minsky built SNARC in his first year and went on to MIT, and Li's time as an assistant professor covered the years in which ImageNet was started.[3][4][5][9] The university's footprint in AI is therefore a record of training and of short but consequential stays, not of a single laboratory or a single product.

On August 13, 2024, OpenAI released SWE-bench Verified, a 500-sample human-validated subset of SWE-bench built with the benchmark's original authors from Princeton, after filtering ambiguous tasks and unreliable tests.
