ERNIE 4.0 Turbo

What it is

ERNIE 4.0 Turbo is a large language model from Baidu, released in June 2024. Baidu presented it as offering stronger capabilities on common use cases than ERNIE 4.0, while running faster and at lower cost.^[1] It belongs to the ERNIE family — the model line behind Baidu's ERNIE Bot chatbot — and is meant for both individual users and companies that call it through an API.

Where it came from

Baidu announced the model on 28 June 2024.^[2][5] TechNode reported that the company had teased it earlier at its Wave Summit 2024 event.^[6] Coverage at launch described it as a significant upgrade to ERNIE 4.0, with significantly increased capabilities, faster responses and boosted reasoning.^[5] The release came roughly eight months after ERNIE 4.0, which Baidu launched in October 2023.^[3]

Main features

The launch claims centred on three things: better answers in everyday use, lower latency, and lower cost than ERNIE 4.0.^[1] SiliconANGLE's account stressed the same points — capability, speed of response and reasoning.^[5] The model was reachable through Baidu's official website and app for individual users, while corporate clients could call it through the API on Baidu's Qianfan platform.^[6] That dual route, a consumer app on one side and a callable interface on the other, is a common way to ship a flagship model.

The word "Turbo" is worth a note. In software and model naming, a suffix like this usually signals an efficiency pass on the same generation — faster and cheaper — rather than a new architecture. Baidu's own description fits that usage: it talks about speed and cost, not about a new generation.^[1][5]

The numbers announced alongside

The launch event was also used to report scale. Baidu CTO Wang Haifeng said at Wave Summit 2024 that ERNIE Bot had 300 million users.^[6] He also said the bot handles 500 million queries a day.^[6] Baidu gave the same 300 million figure when it announced the model on 28 June 2024.^[2][5] For comparison, ERNIE Bot had broken the 100-million-user mark in December 2023.^[6] On the developer side, Baidu said its PaddlePaddle and ERNIE developer community reached 14.7 million people in June 2024.^[1]

Where it sits in the version chain

The release is easiest to place on a timeline. ERNIE 4.0 Turbo comes after ERNIE 4.0, released in October 2023, and before ERNIE 4.5, released in March 2025.^[3][4] In other words it was not a new generation but a mid-cycle iteration built on ERNIE 4.0, positioned at launch as a significant upgrade.^[5] Releases of this kind normally do not change the underlying design; they polish the previous model on reasoning, response time and serving cost, then push it out to users and to enterprise interfaces.

Why it matters

For Baidu, the announcement tied two things together: a model that is faster and cheaper to serve, and the user-scale figures for ERNIE Bot.^[1][2] For anyone using Baidu's tools, it was one more option on the official website, the app and the Qianfan API between ERNIE 4.0 and ERNIE 4.5.^[6]

A caveat is worth keeping. "Faster and cheaper" here is the vendor's own description, not an independent measurement; how much faster or cheaper depends on the task, the benchmark and the price list in question. Read alongside the user numbers, the release shows what Baidu was emphasising in mid-2024 — serving cost and scale — rather than a claim of a step change in capability.
