What it is

ERNIE 4.5 Turbo is a multimodal large language model released by Baidu on 25 April 2025 at Baidu Create 2025 in Wuhan, an event held under the theme "Models Lead, APPs Rule"[1]. Multimodal means the model is built to work with more than one kind of input rather than text alone[1]. Ordinary users can use it free of charge on ERNIE Bot, Baidu's chatbot, while developers reach it through an API, a programmatic interface billed by the token — the small pieces of text a model reads and writes[1].

Where it came from

ERNIE 4.5 Turbo is the successor to ERNIE 4.5, which Baidu released in March 2025[1]. Baidu said ERNIE 4.5 Turbo and ERNIE X1 Turbo, announced at the same event, were launched to address single-modality limits, high hallucination rates, slow responses and high prices[1]. A hallucination, in this setting, is an answer a model produces fluently but incorrectly. The launch release also announced a new suite of AI tools for developers alongside the two Turbo models[1].

What Baidu says improved

Baidu cited improvements in hallucination reduction, logical reasoning, coding and response speed, and said the model's multimodal capabilities were on par with GPT-4.1 and ahead of GPT-4o on multiple benchmarks[1]. The release gave no benchmark scores for that comparison[1]. One set of reported figures covers the multimodal evaluations: on Baidu's own tests, ERNIE 4.5 Turbo averaged 77.68, against 72.76 for GPT-4o[2]. Those evaluations are Baidu's, so the numbers describe how the model fares on tasks the company chose rather than on a neutral ranking.

Price

Baidu set the API price at RMB 0.8 per million input tokens and RMB 3.2 per million output tokens[1]. Input tokens are the text sent to the model and output tokens the text it generates, so the two rates price reading and writing separately. By Baidu's account, that is 80% below ERNIE 4.5, 0.2% of GPT-4.5 and 40% of DeepSeek-V3[1].

Where it sits

ERNIE 4.5 Turbo is an update to the ERNIE 4.5 line rather than Baidu's next flagship: the company previewed ERNIE 5.0, its next flagship, in November 2025[1][3]. The release put price and access next to capability — free use on ERNIE Bot for end users, per-token rates for developers, and comparisons with competing models on cost[1].
