Background
AI agents are software systems that carry out tasks on behalf of users. An agent may plan steps, call tools, retrieve information and exchange messages with other software. The silo problem appears when each vendor defines its own interfaces, message formats and runtime environments: agents can end up in separate enclosed systems, and collaboration across those systems becomes harder. The Linux Foundation framed AGNTCY as a way to break down AI agent silos and counter fragmentation between vendors.[1]
What happened
On 29 July 2025, the Linux Foundation announced in San Francisco that it had welcomed the AGNTCY project.[1] The project sits under the Foundation's governance, with Cisco, Dell Technologies, Google Cloud, Oracle and Red Hat joining as formative members.[1] The Foundation said the project had grown to more than 65 supporting companies since Cisco open sourced it in March 2025.[1]
Key details
The Foundation described AGNTCY as interoperable with A2A and with Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, and as supporting message transport over SLIM.[1] These details concern the connections between agents and between agent systems: interoperability means that an agent built in one environment can exchange messages and work with an agent built in another, instead of being separated by vendor boundaries. In practical terms, it is about whether messages can move from one agent stack to another and whether a transport can carry them. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said the project lays groundwork for secure, interoperable collaboration among autonomous agents.[1]
Why it matters
Hosting under the Linux Foundation gives AGNTCY a shared organizational home and a governance structure with multiple companies involved.[1] For an interoperability effort, participation is a central condition: common interfaces only matter if enough vendors and developers use them. A foundation-hosted project is not a product release; it is an organizational arrangement, and its practical effect depends on implementation and adoption. The announcement records more than 65 supporting companies and names the formative members.[1] How widely the project's interfaces will be adopted is a separate question, but the announcement establishes the governance and membership context in which that work will proceed.
