Background
Baichuan had raised funds before this round. In October 2023 it raised US$300 million from Tencent, Alibaba, Shunwei Capital and Xiaomi. [1] The company had started with US$50 million in seed capital in 2023. [1]
What happened
On 25 July 2024 Baichuan announced a funding round of about 5 billion yuan, which South China Morning Post put at US$687.6 million. The round valued the company at more than 20 billion yuan. [2]
Wikipedia gives the round as US$691 million at a valuation of US$2.8 billion. [1] The two sources therefore report slightly different dollar figures for the same round, and this entry records both.
Key details
Investors included Alibaba, Tencent and Xiaomi. The round also included state-backed funds, among them an AI industrial fund backed by the Beijing and Shanghai governments and Shenzhen Capital Group. [2]
SCMP noted that local investors were funding Chinese AI at a time when US funds were holding back amid geopolitical uncertainty. [2] This is SCMP's observation, not a measured trend.
A few financial terms help here. A funding round is a sale of shares to investors, and valuation is the estimated value of the whole company used to price those shares. Seed capital is the first money a start-up raises, usually before its product is on the market. Yuan and US dollar totals can differ between sources because each one converts the figure differently, so the same round may appear with slightly different totals.
Figures reported in the press are often revised as more details emerge, so the date and source of each number matter.
Impact
The round added to the capital available to Baichuan. The mix of corporate and state-backed investors shows how the company's funding was structured. Readers can compare this entry with the company's model releases in the same period, which are described in separate entries.
