Overview

Wang Xiaochuan is a Chinese computer scientist and entrepreneur, born on 3 October 1978 in Chengdu, Sichuan [1]. His career runs through two phases of Chinese computing: the build-out of internet search and Chinese-language input software, and a newer phase as the founder of an artificial intelligence company.

Education and early research

In 1996 he won a gold medal at the 8th International Olympiad in Informatics [1]. That competition asks school-age programmers to solve algorithmic problems against the clock, and a gold medal is its top tier of awards; the training behind it is mostly about data structures and algorithm design rather than any particular programming language.

That same year he was admitted to Tsinghua University, where he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in computer science and later a doctorate [1]. The doctorate is worth noting because it is unusual among Chinese internet executives of his cohort, most of whom came up through product and engineering roles alone.

Sogou: search and input methods

He joined Sohu in 2003 [1]. The products he built there defined the next decade of his career: Sogou Search, launched in 2004, and the Sogou input method, launched in 2006 [1].

A search engine crawls pages, indexes them, and answers a query by ranking the pages it has stored; the engineering difficulty is in the index and the ranking, not in the query itself. A Chinese input method is a different kind of problem. Because a romanised spelling maps to many possible characters, the software has to order candidate characters by likelihood, which makes typing a prediction task rather than a lookup. An input method also sits directly in front of the user at every sentence written, which is why internet companies have treated it as a strategic product rather than a utility.

In 2010 Sogou was spun off from Sohu as a separate company and he became its CEO [1]. A spin-off gives a business unit its own management, accounts and outside investors; for the person running it, it converts an internal division into a company with its own valuation.

In 2013 he persuaded Tencent to invest US$448 million in Sogou [1]. A strategic investment of that size brings a large outside shareholder into the company and, usually, a set of distribution partnerships alongside the money.

Listing and departure

On 9 November 2017 Sogou listed on the New York Stock Exchange at a valuation of about US$5 billion [1]. A listing on a US exchange opens the company to international public investors and fixes a public price on the business he had run since 2010, with the quarterly reporting obligations that follow.

He resigned as CEO on 15 October 2021, as Sogou was merged into Tencent [1]. The merger folded the independent company back into the firm that had invested in it in 2013, ending Sogou's run as a separately listed business and, with it, his operating role there.

Investing and Baichuan

His investing has focused partly on medical technology: he has invested in companies including Dr. Chunyu, Airdoc and DeepCare [1]. Medical technology is a field where software has to meet regulation and clinical evidence, so it attracts investors with a technical background who are willing to take a longer view than consumer internet timelines allow.

In April 2023 he founded the AI company Baichuan [1][2]. Coverage of the new venture reported the starting scale: Yicai Global reported that the former Sogou founder set up an AI startup with US$50 million [3].

In 2024 he was named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in AI [1].

Why he matters

Wang's career is a compact example of one path through Chinese tech: an olympiad programmer who went into search and input software, ran a company through a spin-off, a large strategic investment and a US listing, then moved into investing and finally into founding an AI company of his own. Search and input methods are both, at bottom, prediction problems over language, which is the same territory that large-scale AI systems work in. That makes the shift from running Sogou to founding Baichuan less of a change of subject than it first appears.
