NAVER releases a pruned, distilled reasoning model in the HyperCLOVA X SEED line

On 21 July 2025 NAVER published HyperCLOVA X SEED 14B Think, a reasoning model built on top of a pruned and distilled model, with training reported at 68,049 A100-80GB GPU hours.

Background

A reasoning model is a language model trained to write out intermediate steps before it gives an answer, instead of producing the answer in one pass. Building one normally starts from a large model and a large training budget. Training compute is usually reported in GPU hours, meaning one accelerator kept busy for one hour; the figure grows with the size of the model and with the amount of data it is trained on.

Shrinking a model afterwards is routine. Pruning removes parts of a trained network; distillation trains a smaller model to imitate the behaviour of a larger one. Both are standard, comparatively cheap ways to end up with something smaller and faster to run. The open question is what they do to reasoning, which tends to depend on many steps of computation being carried out in sequence.

What was released

On 21 July 2025 a model called HyperCLOVA X SEED 14B Think appeared on Hugging Face [1]. It was NAVER's attempt to add reasoning to a pruned and distilled model rather than a full-size one [1]. That framing is the substance of the release. Pruning and distillation normally happen after a model has been trained, and the compressed result is usually fine for ordinary tasks while getting worse at problems that need several linked steps. NAVER said that shrinking a model usually costs reasoning ability, and that this release kept it [1].

Key details

The number the model card leans on is training cost: 68,049 A100-80GB GPU hours [1]. The A100-80GB is a data-centre accelerator, and the unit counts hours of use, so the figure is a direct measure of how much machine time went into the run. For comparison, the card lists Qwen2.5-14B at 3.6 million and Qwen3-14B at 6.3 million GPU hours [1]. Put against those two numbers, 68,049 hours is a small fraction: roughly one fiftieth of the first and about one ninety-third of the second.

The method builds on the HyperCLOVA X THINK technical report from June 2025 [2]. That report set out NAVER's approach to training reasoning into its models; the SEED release applies the same line of work to a model that has been cut down and distilled rather than a full-size one.

The weights are downloadable under NAVER's own licence [1], so the terms on which the model can be used and redistributed are the company's own rather than a community licence.

What it means

It is useful to separate the two claims being made. One is technical: that a compressed model can retain multi-step reasoning rather than losing it in the process. The other is economic: that reasoning training does not have to be paid for at the scale of the comparison figures on the card. Together they describe a direction in which capable reasoning models become cheaper to produce and light enough to be practical outside a large data centre.

A single model card does not settle either claim. It reports the training cost of one run, and it makes a claim about retained reasoning ability without the surrounding evaluation detail being part of the same page. What it does document is the cost side clearly, against named baselines, and that is the part a reader can check directly. The release is also a marker of how the field is shifting: the interesting engineering question is no longer only how large a model can be trained, but how much of a large model's behaviour survives being made small.

The licence matters for a different reason. Weights that arrive under a company's own terms are usable, but the conditions are set by that company, which shapes who can build on the model and how far derivative work can travel.
