Overview

Satya Nadella is an Indian-American business executive who has led Microsoft since 2014. He was born on 19 August 1967 in Hyderabad, India. On 4 February 2014 he became Microsoft's third chief executive, succeeding Steve Ballmer, and in 2021 he became chairman of the company, succeeding John W. Thompson.[1][2]

Education and early career

Nadella holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology (1988), a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (1990) and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (1997).[1] Before joining Microsoft in 1992, he worked at Sun Microsystems.[1]

Main contributions

Inside Microsoft he rose through senior roles. He was President of the Server & Tools Division from February 2011 to February 2014 and then Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise group, the business that built Microsoft's server, cloud and developer products.[1] His 2017 book "Hit Refresh" described his view of the company's direction.[1]

On AI, Nadella announced Microsoft's 2019 partnership with OpenAI, saying "AI is one of the most transformative technologies of our time".[3] At the February 2023 launch of the AI-powered Bing, he said "AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search."[6]

Career as chief executive

In March 2024 Nadella announced that Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan would lead a new Microsoft AI organisation.[4] Under this structure, Suleyman reports to Nadella and runs the consumer AI products, including Copilot.[4] In March 2026 Nadella unified consumer and commercial Copilot into one effort, giving the work a single leadership structure.[5]

Influence

Nadella's decisions shaped how Microsoft approached AI. Three milestones in this period are the 2019 OpenAI partnership, the 2023 launch of the AI-powered Bing, and the 2024 creation of Microsoft AI.[3][6][4]

Role of the chief executive

The chief executive of a large software company sets the overall direction, decides which products the company puts its resources into, and speaks for the company to customers, partners and governments. For Microsoft, which sells cloud infrastructure, operating systems, office software and developer tools, these decisions cover a wide range of businesses. Nadella's public statements on AI were therefore read as signals about where the company would put its investment, and the partnerships he announced determined which outside technologies Microsoft's products would depend on.

Readers who want to follow his thinking in his own words can start with his book and with the company's official announcements, which are the sources cited in this entry.[1][3]
