Overview
Sundar Pichai is an Indian-born American executive, born on 10 June 1972 in Madurai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu [1]. His public career is closely bound to Google: he joined the company in 2004, built his reputation on its browser and mobile software, and went on to lead first Google and then its parent company, Alphabet [1].
Education
Pichai's first degree was in metallurgical engineering, the branch of engineering that deals with metals, alloys and the processes used to extract, shape and treat them. He earned a B.Tech in that subject from IIT Kharagpur in 1993 [1]. He then moved to Stanford University for an MS in materials science and engineering, a field concerned with how the internal structure of a material determines its properties and how it behaves in use [1]. Later he took an MBA at the Wharton School [1]. Technical training in materials followed by a business degree is an unusual combination, and it maps neatly onto product management, where engineering constraints and commercial choices have to be weighed together.
Chrome, ChromeOS and Android
Pichai joined Google in 2004 [1]. He led Google Chrome, the company's web browser, and ChromeOS, an operating system built around a browser-centred idea of personal computing rather than around a traditional desktop software stack [1]. Leading a browser is a product role with unusually wide reach: the browser is the layer through which most people touch web services, so decisions about speed, standards and security shape how the wider web develops, and an operating system built on the same foundations extends that reach to whole devices.
On 13 March 2013 Android was added to his responsibilities [1]. Android is Google's mobile operating system, the software layer on which many of the world's phones run. The change took his remit beyond the desktop web and into phones, and it placed the two main ways people reach Google's services — browser and mobile operating system — under one manager.
Chief executive
On 10 August 2015 Pichai was selected as CEO of Google, and he took the role on 24 October 2015, the date on which the formation of Alphabet was completed [1]. The reorganisation placed Google alongside other businesses under a new parent, Alphabet, with Pichai running Google itself. In December 2019, after Larry Page stepped down, Pichai became CEO of Alphabet as well [1], which made him responsible for the whole group rather than for its largest company alone.
The AI years
Much of Pichai's public activity as chief executive has concerned artificial intelligence. On 6 February 2023 he announced Bard, described as Google's experimental conversational AI service [2]. A conversational AI service is one that a user talks to in ordinary language and that answers in ordinary language, rather than returning a list of links or a fixed menu of commands; calling it experimental signalled that it was being released for testing rather than as a settled product.
On 20 April 2023 he announced the merger of Google Brain and DeepMind into Google DeepMind [3]. Google Brain and DeepMind were two separate research organisations working on machine learning; combining them into a single unit consolidated research effort in one place instead of running two parallel programmes.
On 18 November 2025 Pichai co-signed the announcement of Gemini 3 [4]. The same announcement reported that AI Overviews had 2 billion monthly users and that the Gemini app had more than 650 million monthly users [4]. Those figures are a measure of scale: they describe products used by very large numbers of people every month, not research prototypes.
Why he matters
Pichai's career traces a path that has become common in large technology companies but was not obvious when he started: an engineer trained in materials science who moved through product leadership into general management. His record at Google is a sequence of widening scopes — a browser, then an operating system, then the phone platform, then the company, then the parent group — and, in recent years, of consolidating the company's AI research and products under a single public story. For readers trying to follow how Google organised itself under Alphabet, his roles are a useful index: the dates on which responsibilities moved to him mark the moments when the company redrew its internal boundaries.
