Overview
Zhang Yiming is a Chinese technology entrepreneur and the co-founder of ByteDance. He was born on 1 April 1983 in Longyan, Fujian, in southeastern China.[1] In March 2012 he and Liang Rubo co-founded ByteDance.[1] He ran the company as chief executive for most of its first decade, formally stepping down from that role at the end of 2021, and is listed as its founder and chairman.[1]
Education and early career
Zhang studied at Nankai University in Tianjin from 2001 and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering.[1] That degree is the standard training for someone who goes on to build consumer internet products: it covers programming, algorithms and the design of software systems, the tools an engineer needs to turn an idea into something that runs on servers and phones.
His first industry job came in February 2006, when he joined the travel-search site Kuxun as its fifth employee and first engineer.[1] Joining a young company that early usually means building the technical core yourself — the search over a body of data, and the systems that keep it running. In 2008 he spent a brief period at Microsoft.[1] In 2009 he founded 99fang.com, a search site for real estate.[1]
The sequence of jobs traces a fairly clear line. Kuxun applied search to travel information; 99fang applied it to property listings. Both were attempts to take a large, messy body of information — flights, hotels, homes — and make it findable. The experience of building that kind of product, and of watching how users behaved inside it, is the background against which ByteDance was later started.
Founding ByteDance
In March 2012 Zhang and Liang Rubo co-founded ByteDance.[1] The partnership had deep roots: Liang roomed with Zhang at Nankai University in Tianjin.[3] Founders who already know and trust each other from student days tend to divide work quickly and argue less about ownership, which matters in the first year of a startup when most decisions are made under time pressure with little information.
Stepping down as CEO
In May 2021 Zhang announced in a surprise message to employees that he would step down as chief executive, and named Liang Rubo as his successor.[3] He said he wanted to have greater impact on longer-term initiatives, and that at the end of 2021 he would move to a "key strategy" position while remaining chairman.[3] The change was also announced publicly in May 2021, with Liang named as the incoming CEO.[1] Zhang formally stepped down on 4 November 2021 and remains listed as founder and chairman.[1]
Reporting on the chairmanship has differed. Reuters reported, citing one source, that Liang Rubo had taken over from Zhang as chairman of ByteDance's five-person board.[2] Zhang's own listing as founder and chairman of the company points in another direction.[1]
What he described as his reason for leaving the CEO job is worth taking at face value: the argument was not that the company needed a different operator, but that he wanted to spend his time on questions whose results show up over years rather than quarters. Handing daily operations to a co-founder he had known since university was the way he chose to make that shift.
Standing
In September 2026 Bloomberg estimated his net worth at about US$105 billion, at a time when Fortune reported he was Asia's richest person.[1] Such figures are estimates of what his stake in the company he co-founded would be worth on paper, and they move with valuations.
For readers trying to understand how large technology companies change hands, Zhang's case is a clean example of a founder moving from running operations to a longer-horizon role while keeping the title of chairman. It also shows how much of a company's early shape comes from the years before it existed: an engineering degree, a first job as the only engineer in a small search startup, and a second attempt in a different corner of search.
