Overview

Jingren Zhou is a computer scientist and technology executive at Alibaba. He is chief technology officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, and in October 2025 he joined the Alibaba Partnership, the company's internal group of senior leaders.[1][2] Caixin also describes him as leading Alibaba's Tongyi AI lab.[2] In 2024 he was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).[1]

Education

Zhou entered the School of the Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1994 and graduated in 1999.[1] The School of the Gifted Young is a USTC programme for students who begin university unusually early, and it has long been one of the routes by which Chinese students move into scientific research.

After USTC he went abroad for graduate study, receiving a PhD in computer science from Columbia University in 2004.[1] A doctorate of this kind is awarded for original research, so the degree marks the point at which he moved from coursework into full-time research work.

Cloud and AI at Alibaba

Zhou rose to chief technology officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence in 2022.[1] A cloud unit's CTO sets the technical direction of the computing, storage, networking and data services that the business rents out to other companies, and has to decide which technologies to build in-house and which to buy. The job sits between engineering and product strategy: the choices made at that level shape what customers can run on the platform.

His position has been durable. A Caixin article published in January 2026 still describes him as the cloud unit's chief technology officer.[2]

Alongside the cloud role, Caixin reports that Zhou leads Alibaba's Tongyi AI lab.[2] Tongyi is the name under which Alibaba has released its large language models and related AI systems. Holding both responsibilities places him at a point where two areas of the industry have become closely connected: training and serving large models requires large amounts of computing, and cloud providers are among the main suppliers of that computing. A person who oversees both a cloud business's technology and a model lab therefore sits where infrastructure decisions and model decisions meet.

The Alibaba Partnership

In October 2025 Zhou joined the Alibaba Partnership.[2] The partnership is an internal body made up of senior people from across Alibaba, and membership is one of the ways the company marks who belongs to its top leadership circle. For an executive whose public profile had been tied to a single business unit, joining it indicates a role that reaches beyond the cloud division.

Recognition

In 2024 Zhou was named an ACM Fellow.[1] The ACM is a professional society for computing, and Fellow is one of its higher grades, awarded to people whose work the society judges to have had substantial influence on the field. The citation for the class of fellows reads that they were "elected ACM Fellows for their transformative contributions to computing science and technology".[1]

What the record shows

The arc of Zhou's career is legible from a small number of markers: an early-entry science programme at USTC, a doctorate at Columbia, and then technical leadership in industry, first visibly as chief technology officer of a major cloud business and later with an AI lab and a seat in Alibaba's partnership added to that role.[1][2] The combination is unusual in a way that reflects how the field has changed: cloud platforms and AI models are now developed by overlapping teams, and the people who lead them are expected to understand both the machinery that runs the models and the models themselves.
