AutoGPT

An open-source autonomous agent released in March 2023 that uses OpenAI's large language models, such as GPT-4, to break a user's goal into sub-tasks and carry them out with tools like web browsing.

Era Generative AI for everyone

Release date

What AutoGPT is

AutoGPT is an open-source autonomous software agent. It is built on OpenAI's large language models, such as GPT-4, and its purpose is to attempt to reach a goal that a user describes in ordinary natural language.[2] The word "agent" here means a program that is given an objective rather than a sequence of commands: the model is asked to decide what to do next, and the surrounding software carries the decision out.

How it works

The difference from a chatbot is where the initiative sits. A chatbot needs a continuous stream of user commands; AutoGPT works autonomously, breaking the main goal into smaller sub-tasks and using tools such as web browsing and file management to complete them.[2] The tools are what connect the model's text to the outside world: browsing lets it look things up, file management lets it write down and read back what it has produced. A goal such as finding something out and writing a summary can therefore proceed through several steps without a person typing each one. That design is also where the well-known failure modes come from.

Origin

AutoGPT was released on 30 March 2023 by Toran Bruce Richards, the founder of the video game company Significant Gravitas Ltd.[2] The code lives in the Significant-Gravitas/AutoGPT repository on GitHub, which was created on 16 March 2023 and has roughly 188,000 stars.[1] Licensing is recorded differently by different sources: GitHub reports the repository's license as NOASSERTION, while Wikipedia's infobox lists MIT, so the MIT code is recorded from the encyclopedia entry.[1][2]

Reception

The timing mattered. GPT-4 had been released only weeks earlier, and AutoGPT was one of the first widely accessible applications to show what the model's autonomous capabilities looked like in practice.[2] It became the top trending repository on GitHub after its release and has repeatedly trended on Twitter since.[2] In October 2023 the project's parent company, Significant Gravitas Ltd., raised 12 million dollars in venture funding to support further development.[2]

Limitations

The list of known limitations is short and blunt: infinite loops, hallucinations, error accumulation from relying on its own feedback, and high running costs.[2] Each follows from the structure. A loop happens when the agent keeps restating a step without recognising that it is not making progress. Hallucination is the familiar tendency of language models to produce confident text that is not true — harmless in a chat window, more consequential when that text drives a tool. Error accumulation follows from self-feedback: if one step is wrong and the agent treats its own output as a basis for the next step, the mistake gets built upon rather than corrected. High running costs follow from the number of model calls a single task requires.

Why it matters

AutoGPT did not invent the idea of software that acts on its own, but it made the combination of a large language model, a loop of self-directed steps and external tools visible to a wide audience, at a moment when such models had just become capable enough to try it. It also illustrated the trade-off that has accompanied agent systems ever since: the more freedom the loop has, the more the reliability and the cost of each step matter.
