What it is
The Z.ai chatbot, first released under the name ChatGLM and later renamed GLM, is the consumer-facing chat product built by Zhipu AI.[1] It sits in a browser tab rather than in a code editor or on a server: a user types a question, a request to draft text, or a piece of code to explain, and a large language model returns an answer in the same window. No installation and no programming interface are needed, which is what separates a consumer product from the model weights and APIs a research lab publishes. The service is reachable at chat.z.ai.[1]
Where it came from
The GLM chatbot was initially developed by Zhipu AI and Tsinghua KEG in 2023.[1] That pairing — a company and a university group — helps explain the shape of the product: the underlying models come out of a research setting, and the chat window is where the public meets them first. The naming follows the models themselves. The product launched as ChatGLM, after the model family it served, and was later renamed GLM as the family and the site converged on one name.[1]
How new models reach users
A chat product of this kind doubles as a release channel. Rather than asking users to download weights or call an API, the company swaps the model behind the same web interface, so an improvement shows up as better answers in a familiar text box. Zhipu has used the site this way: when GLM-5.1 was released, the company said it would be available on chat.z.ai shortly afterwards.[2] The gap between a model release and its arrival in the consumer product is a practical measure of how quickly a lab turns research into something a student or an office worker can use.
Part of a wider line
The chat window is one item in a broader set of Zhipu products aimed at different tasks. The same company also offers the Ying video generator, the AutoGLM phone agent, the AMiner research database and the ZCode coding environment.[1] The spread shows the same assistant capability being wrapped in different interfaces: an agent that operates apps on a handset, a generator that produces video clips, a literature database for researchers, and an environment for developers. ZCode, the AI coding development environment, was released on 2 July 2026 and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.[1] Each of these is a shell around much the same core: a model that reads a request and produces text, code or a plan.
Pressure on the front door
Consumer chat services are expensive to run, because every message costs computing time on clusters of accelerators, and a popular service can attract more demand than the hardware can absorb. Zhipu hit that limit: in February 2026 the company restricted new sign-ups amid compute shortages and user complaints.[1] Closing registration is a blunt instrument, but it is one of the few levers available when a service is free or cheap and demand outruns supply; the alternative is letting response times collapse for everyone already using the product.
What to take from it
The Z.ai chatbot is a useful example of how a model lab reaches ordinary users: a name that follows the model family, a web address that becomes the default entry point, and a habit of shipping new models into the same window. Its history also shows the constraints — a university partnership at the start, a product line that grew outward into agents, video and code, and a capacity crunch that forced the company to slow how fast new users could join.
