OpenSandbox

OpenSandbox is a general-purpose sandbox platform for AI applications, contributed by Alibaba to the Agentic AI Foundation. It offers multi-language SDKs, a unified sandbox API, Docker and Kubernetes runtimes, and a protocol that lets teams plug in custom runtimes.

Era Generative AI for everyone

Release date

What it is

OpenSandbox is a general-purpose sandbox platform for AI applications [1]. A sandbox is an isolated environment in which a program can execute commands, read and write files and call tools without direct access to the machine that hosts it. That isolation is what makes it safe to actually run code produced by a model. The project's repository describes it as a secure, fast and extensible sandbox runtime for AI agents [2].

How it works

Three pieces fit together. Multi-language SDKs let developers drive sandboxes from the programming language their application already uses. A unified sandbox API sits on top, so the same interface is presented whatever is underneath, and integration code does not have to be rewritten when the runtime changes. And the platform comes with both Docker and Kubernetes runtimes, covering a single machine as well as a cluster [1].

Beneath these sits a sandbox protocol that defines lifecycle and execution APIs [1]. The lifecycle side covers the states a sandbox moves through — being created, running, being torn down — and the execution side covers the operations carried out inside it. Because those interfaces are written down as a protocol rather than baked into one implementation, a team can extend the platform with a custom runtime [1] while the layers above keep talking to the same SDKs and API. For a platform meant to be used by different teams on different infrastructure, keeping the interface fixed and the implementation replaceable matters at least as much as how fast any single runtime is.

What it is used for

The documented use cases are coding agents, GUI agents, agent evaluation, AI code execution and reinforcement-learning training [1]. A coding agent has to write code, run it, read the errors and try again, and each of those steps needs somewhere for the program to actually execute. A GUI agent works through a graphical interface, so it needs a screen-like environment it can click and read. Evaluation needs a clean, consistent environment for every run, otherwise scores are not comparable. Reinforcement-learning training puts an agent in an environment where it tries actions repeatedly and learns from the results. What these share is a double requirement: the AI must really act, and the acting must stay inside bounds.

Origin and governance

The repository was created on 17 December 2025, is written in Python and carries the Apache-2.0 license [2], a permissive license that allows modification and redistribution. In October 2026 Alibaba contributed the project to the Agentic AI Foundation [1]. Alibaba's Xiaobin Xu said the company did not want the project's future to be defined by a single company [1].

Where it sits

As agents move from answering questions to taking actions — running code, driving interfaces, calling tools — the question of where those actions happen turns from an implementation detail into an engineering decision that has to be settled first. OpenSandbox's answer is a general platform: a unified API and SDKs at the top, a protocol for lifecycle and execution in the middle, and Docker or Kubernetes runtimes below [1]. Its governance follows the same logic; the project's direction is held by a foundation rather than a single vendor, so that a piece of shared infrastructure can be used across companies and infrastructures [1].

  1. ReleaseAAIF adds Agent Skills, Open Responses, OpenEnv and OpenSandbox

On 22 October 2026 the Agentic AI Foundation added four projects — Agent Skills from Anthropic, Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face and OpenSandbox from Alibaba — bringing it to 10 hosted projects covering different layers of the agentic stack.
