What CyberOne is
CyberOne is a full-size humanoid bionic robot built by the Chinese consumer-electronics company Xiaomi and nicknamed Tieda. According to reporting by Securities Times, the machine stands 177 cm tall and weighs 52 kg[1][2]. Xiaomi presented it on the evening of 11 August 2022, during Lei Jun's annual speech[1][2].
"Bionic" here describes a body plan borrowed from human anatomy: a head carrying cameras, a torso, two arms and two legs. It says nothing about biological materials. The humanoid shape lets a robot use tools and move through rooms that were designed for people, which is the usual argument for building machines this way. It also raises the difficulty, because keeping balance and walking has to be solved together with sensing and control rather than separately.
Where it came from
Xiaomi is a company known mainly for phones and consumer electronics, and it used its annual speech — an event where it sets out where it is heading — to put the robot on stage[1]. Lei Jun said at the launch that humanoid robots were the most technically integrated and most difficult category within intelligent robotics, and that Xiaomi was still at the first stage[1]. Securities Times reported that CyberOne had not yet entered mass production[2].
How it moves and senses
Securities Times reported that the robot supports 21 degrees of freedom and that it responds within 0.5 milliseconds at each degree of freedom[1]. A degree of freedom is one independent axis of motion: a hinge that bends one way, or a joint that can twist. Spread across arms, legs, waist and head, 21 of them is roughly the range a simple humanoid needs in order to gesture and walk. Xiaomi's own page on CyberOne says its full-body control algorithm coordinates those 21 joint degrees of freedom, so that the joints act as one system instead of as separate motors[4].
For perception, the robot carries Xiaomi's self-developed Mi-Sense depth vision module, and, combined with AI interaction algorithms, it can recognise people, gestures and expressions, according to Securities Times[1]. A depth module works like a camera that also measures distance, so the robot gets a three-dimensional picture of a room rather than a flat image. Xiaomi says the module's depth information accuracy reaches 1% within 8 metres[4].
Securities Times also reported that the robot can recognise 45 human emotional states across six categories and 85 kinds of environmental sounds[3]. That belongs to the interaction side of the design: reading a face or a sound and adjusting the response.
For movement, the same reporting described five types of joint drive distributed across the body, with a peak torque of 300 N·m[3]. Torque is the twisting force a joint can apply; a peak figure describes the most a joint can produce briefly, not what it sustains in ordinary motion.
Where it sits
At launch CyberOne was a demonstration rather than a product. Securities Times reported that it had not entered mass production[2], and Lei Jun described Xiaomi as still being at the first stage of the work[1]. That framing places it as an early public step into humanoid robotics for a company whose main business is consumer electronics: evidence that the vision, interaction, control and drive pieces had been put together into a working machine, while leaving open when, or whether, such a robot would reach buyers.
