A self-contained walking humanoid
Honda completed the P3 in September 1997[1]. The company describes it as a completely independent bipedal humanoid walking robot[1]. "Bipedal" means it stands and moves on two legs, the way people do; "humanoid" means its body follows a human layout, with a head, a torso and two arms. Walking on two legs is a difficult control problem: the machine has to stay balanced while it shifts its weight from one foot to the other, and a human-like shape adds a head and arms whose mass has to be taken into account as well.
The word Honda uses for the P3 is "independent", which sets it apart from a machine that only moves while something outside it supplies support or guidance. The P3 is presented as a robot that walks on its own two legs.
Size and weight
The P3 stood 1,600 mm tall and weighed 130 kg[1]. Getting to that point took engineering work on the robot's insides: Honda reviewed the materials used in its components and incorporated distributed control, changes aimed at making the P3 smaller and lighter[1]. Distributed control in general means spreading control functions across several places in the machine instead of concentrating them in one unit, which can cut down on wiring and bulk.
Honda said the P3 approached a size that could blend into human daily life[1]. That is a statement about dimensions rather than about tasks: a machine built to roughly human scale fits into the spaces people already use — doorways, rooms, stairwells — in a way that laboratory hardware of a different size does not.
Where it sits in the line
Honda treats the P3 as a step in a continuing development effort rather than an endpoint. When it introduced ASIMO in 2000, it described that robot as a further evolved version of the P3[2]. The published figures show what "further evolved" meant in practice. ASIMO's height was reduced from 160 cm to 120 cm and its weight from 130 kg to 43 kg[2]. The arms were reworked as well: ASIMO's shoulders were designed 20 degrees higher than the P3's, and the vertical range of arm movement increased from the P3's 90 degrees to 105 degrees[2].
Those numbers point in a consistent direction. The P3 had brought a Honda humanoid close to human size; the next machine kept the human-like form but pushed hard on height, mass and the reach of the arms. A lighter body with a higher shoulder line and a wider vertical arm swing is easier to move and to fit into the same spaces as people.
Why it matters
The P3 is the point in Honda's humanoid programme where the machine reached roughly human scale, and it is the reference against which the company measured its successor. Read together, the P3 and ASIMO describe a clear trajectory: keeping the bipedal, human-shaped layout while steadily shrinking and lightening the hardware and loosening up the arms. For anyone following legged robotics, the P3 is the benchmark that makes the later jump to a 43 kg machine legible as a deliberate design goal rather than an accident.
