What it is
On the evening of 12 December 2023, Tesla released a video of Optimus Gen 2, the second generation of its humanoid robot.[1][2] In the video the robot walks without external support, squats, holds a yoga pose and dances; it also picks up an egg with two fingers and sets it down again.[1][3]
"Humanoid" describes a robot built to match the shape and joint layout of a person. The point of that shape is practical: a machine built like a human can move through spaces and use tools that were already designed for humans, instead of requiring workshops and homes to be rebuilt around it.
What changed in the hardware
The two headline numbers in the video are speed and weight. Tesla said walking speed was 30% higher than the previous generation, and that overall weight fell by 10 kg, from 73 kg to 63 kg, with improved balance and whole-body control.[1][2] Tesla said the weight reduction came with no sacrifice of function or performance, but did not disclose how it was achieved.[2]
The more detailed changes are in joints and sensing: Gen 2 used actuators and sensors designed by Tesla; a 2-DoF driven neck; an 11-DoF dexterous hand with tactile sensors on all ten fingers; electronics and wiring integrated into the actuators; foot force/torque sensors; and articulated toes.[1][2]
Degrees of freedom (DoF) can be understood roughly as the number of directions in which a part can move independently. A joint that turns around a single axis has one degree of freedom; a hand with 11 degrees of freedom has fingers whose joints can bend and spread separately. That is what makes a task like picking up an egg possible at all: grip too hard and the shell breaks. Tactile sensors on all ten fingers are what make controlling that grip conceivable. Articulated toes and foot force/torque sensors serve a similar purpose — standing and walking require the robot to know how much force it is putting on the ground and where its weight is.
Wikipedia's account of the same video is consistent with this: it says the December 2023 video showed the robot walking, dancing and poaching an egg, and that the hands had 11 degrees of freedom.[4]
Where it sits
Reporting at the time said Optimus was expected to be delivered within three to five years, with output reaching millions of units and a price near US$20,000.[2] That was an expectation, not a record of something that had already happened. It does show the direction the robot was aimed at: not a one-off laboratory prototype, but a product intended to be built at scale and sold at a price ordinary buyers could consider.
Judged as a demonstration, the video is making a claim about whole-machine capability — walking and balance, whole-body coordination and fine hand work appearing in one machine. Each of those is difficult on its own; together they are harder, because the robot has to hold itself steady while its arms and fingers carry out motions that depend on controlling force. Gen 2's video put those abilities side by side and attached specific numbers to the speed and weight changes from the previous generation.[1][2]
