Tesla reveals Optimus Gen 2

On 12 December 2023 Tesla posted an unannounced video of Optimus Gen 2, a lighter, faster humanoid with Tesla-designed actuators and sensors, an 11-degree-of-freedom hand and tactile sensing.

Background

A humanoid robot is built to move and work in spaces made for people — stairs, doorways, tools — rather than in the fixed layout a factory arm expects. Tesla had already shown a first-generation Optimus. Less than three months before this release, it published a video demonstrating what it described as end-to-end embodied intelligence on that first-generation machine: instead of hand-coding each step, a learned model maps what the robot senses directly onto what it does[1].

What happened

On the evening of 12 December 2023, Tesla released a video introducing the second-generation Optimus without any advance notice[1][2]. The video itself said Gen 2 would be released in December 2023[1]. The reveal was a short clip rather than a staged event — no keynote, no press conference, just the footage appearing online.

What the video showed

The clip led with two headline numbers: walking speed up 30% and overall weight down 10 kg compared with the previous generation[1][2].

It also listed hardware built around parts Tesla designed itself: the actuators that drive the joints and the sensors that report on them[1][2]. A degree of freedom (DoF) here means one independent axis of motion a joint can move along — a neck with 2 DoF can turn and tilt. The video listed a 2-DoF neck and an 11-DoF hand[1][2]. The hand was paired with tactile sensors, the parts that let a robot register how hard it is gripping something rather than only where its fingers are[1][2].

To demonstrate the result, the robot was shown squatting, holding a yoga balance pose, and picking up an egg and setting it down again[2][3]. Lifting an egg without breaking it is a familiar way of showing fine force control: the machine has to stop adding pressure well before the shell gives way.

Why it matters

The timing was part of the story. The release came less than three months after Tesla's video showing end-to-end embodied intelligence on the first generation[1], a short interval between two public demonstrations of the same programme.

The ambitions attached to the machine were far larger than the clip. A report quoted Musk as saying demand for Optimus could reach 10-20 billion units, and that the robot would account for much of Tesla's long-term value[1]. That is a forward-looking statement from the company's chief executive about a product not yet sold, not a measured result; the video itself was a demonstration, and the numbers in it — speed, weight, degrees of freedom — describe the hardware rather than benchmark performance on any independent test.
