iRobot

An American robotics company founded in 1990 by three MIT researchers, iRobot built space and military robots before its Roomba vacuum cleaner made it a consumer name; it listed on NASDAQ in 2005 and filed for bankruptcy protection in 2025.

Overview

iRobot is an American robotics company headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts [1]. Its history covers almost the whole range of what a robot company can do: planetary exploration hardware, military equipment, a mass-market household appliance, a public listing, and finally bankruptcy protection.

Founding and early work

iRobot was founded in 1990 by three members of MIT's Artificial Intelligence Lab [1]. The founders were Rodney Brooks, Colin Angle and Helen Greiner [1]. According to 21世纪经济报道 (21st Century Business Herald), the three set out to create genuinely useful robots, rather than machines that only demonstrated ideas inside a laboratory [2].

The first markets the company aimed at were far from the home. The founders designed robots for space exploration and military defence [1]. iRobot developed a robotic arm prototype for NASA's Sojourner rover on the Mars Pathfinder mission [2], and it also supplied demining and reconnaissance robots to the US military [2].

Those two lines of work have something in common: the machine has to act where a person cannot easily stand, whether on another planet or in ground where mines may be buried, and it has to keep working without someone standing next to it. Work of this kind gave the young company hard engineering problems and a customer that paid for solutions, but it also tied the business to government budgets and procurement cycles.

Roomba and going public

The product that made iRobot a household name was the Roomba, a robot vacuum cleaner for the home. It sold 50,000 units in its first year [2], reached a million units by 2004 [1], and passed two million units by 2005 [2]. Selling to consumers is a different business from selling to agencies: the price has to be low, the product has to work without training, and sales depend on retail shelves rather than procurement contracts.

In November 2005 iRobot began trading on NASDAQ under the ticker IRBT [1]. Its shares rose more than 20% on the first day of trading [2].

Decline

The consumer business did not stay healthy. In 2022 the company's revenue fell 24% to USD 1.183 billion, with a net loss of USD 286 million [2]. That same year, Amazon's USD 1.7 billion acquisition proposal collapsed after a European Union antitrust review [2].

On 14 December 2025 iRobot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection [1]. Chapter 11 is the part of US bankruptcy law that lets a company keep operating while it renegotiates its debts with creditors, instead of shutting down and selling off its assets. The restructuring plan was settled on 15 December 2025, and the company's stock value fell to zero [2].

Place in the field

The record iRobot leaves is concrete: an arm for a Mars rover, demining and reconnaissance machines for the military, a vacuum cleaner sold in the millions, a 2005 listing, and a 2025 bankruptcy filing. For anyone following robotics, that arc shows how far a research lab's ideas can travel into ordinary homes, and how exposed a hardware maker can be once the market around it changes.
