Background
Command A Reasoning was Cohere's first reasoning model. Reasoning models work through a problem step by step before giving an answer [1].
What happened
On 21 August 2025 Cohere released Command A Reasoning, a hybrid reasoning model for complex agentic tasks [1]. The weights were published on Hugging Face under a non-commercial licence [2].
Key details
The model has 111 billion parameters and a 256k-token context [2]. Users can turn thinking on or off and set a thinking budget [1]. The model works in English and 22 other languages [1].
Cohere said it has the strongest tool use in the Command family [1].
Impact
The release added a reasoning model to Cohere's lineup, and Oracle later offered it through its OCI Generative AI service together with Command A Vision. For developers, the switch between thinking and non-thinking modes gave one model two ways of working, depending on how hard a task was.
