EleutherAI launches a nonprofit research institute

On 2 March 2023 EleutherAI, the volunteer group known for openly training GPT-3-like models, announced it had formed a nonprofit research institute backed by Stability AI, Hugging Face, Canva and others.

Background

EleutherAI began as a grassroots group. Its founding members, Connor Leahy, Leo Gao and Sid Black, wrote the code and collected the data for a GPT-3-like model[3]. Work of that scale is usually carried out by a company with a large engineering team and a large compute budget; doing it as a volunteer collective meant publishing the model, the data and the training code so that others could use and check them.

A volunteer group has limits, though. Members work in their spare time, schedules depend on who is available, and long, continuous engineering or research programmes are hard to sustain. That is the background against which EleutherAI later reorganized itself.

What happened

On 2 March 2023, EleutherAI announced that it had formed a nonprofit research institute[1]. The step turned an informal, volunteer-run collective into an organization with a legal form, funders and a stated research direction.

Stella Biderman coordinated the setup[1]. The institute is run by Biderman, Curtis Huebner and Shivanshu Purohit[1][2].

Backers included Stability AI, Hugging Face, Canva, Lambda Labs and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman[1].

There was also a change among the founders. Co-founders Connor Leahy and Sid Black had left to found Conjecture, and Leahy joined the board of advisers of the new institute[1]. In other words, some of the people who wrote the earliest code and assembled the earliest data moved on to a new company while staying connected to the institute in an advisory role.

Why formalize

Biderman told TechCrunch that formalizing as an organization would let EleutherAI build a full-time staff and take on longer projects than a volunteer group could[3]. The point is practical rather than symbolic: a full-time staff means work can proceed continuously instead of being fitted around volunteers' free hours, and an organizational structure with funding makes multi-year research plans possible at all.

A shift in research focus

The institute shifted toward interpretability, alignment and scientific research[2]. Interpretability asks what a model is actually doing inside — why a given input produces a given output, and which internal features correspond to which behaviours. Alignment asks how to make a model's behaviour match human intent and values. Both are closer to understanding a system before extending its capabilities than to simply making a model larger or pushing a benchmark score higher. For a group that started out by training a large model, this is a move of research emphasis.

What it means

Seen from outside, the significance of the announcement is that a volunteer group that became known for openly training large language models chose to keep going in the form of a nonprofit institute, and to concentrate on interpretability and alignment. For developers and researchers who rely on openly released models, data and documentation, whether an organization of this kind is stable matters directly: it affects whether those artifacts remain available and maintained. The March 2023 announcement was the moment EleutherAI's work stopped depending entirely on unpaid volunteer time and acquired an institutional footing[1][3].
