Background
Midjourney is a text-to-image generation service: a user writes a prompt in ordinary language and the system returns pictures made to match it. The service is developed in numbered versions, and a new version is first shown to users as an alpha release.
What happened
On 14 March 2023, Midjourney founder David Holz said that version 5 would be released that week. The announcement followed a final rating session that was open to all paying customers, in which users compared candidate images before the release went out [2]. V5 was then released in alpha on 15 March 2023 [1].
What was different
The Decoder reported that test images from the V5 alpha had a higher default resolution of 1024 x 1024 pixels and covered a wider range of styles than earlier output [2]. Those two properties are the ones a user notices first: resolution sets how much detail survives in the file without upscaling, and style range decides how far a prompt can be pushed away from the service's earlier house look.
A Midjourney developer described the version through the Ship of Theseus, the thought experiment in which every plank of a ship is replaced one by one. In that comparison, every component of V5 had been replaced, but none of them had been developed from scratch [2]. The remark is a way of saying that the change was spread across the whole system rather than concentrated in one new part.
Point releases
V5 was followed by V5.1 on 3 May 2023 and V5.2 on 22 June 2023 [1]. V5.2 added an aesthetics system and a zoom-out feature [1]. An aesthetics system steers generated images toward a preferred look; zoom-out extends the picture outward beyond the frame that was originally generated, so that a scene can be widened after the first result.
Context
In March 2023, an image of Pope Francis wearing a puffer coat, made with Midjourney, went viral as a fake [1]. The episode belongs to the same stretch of weeks as the V5 alpha, and it is the kind of case that made the details of a release matter to people outside the service's own users: the question was less what a model could be asked to draw than how a generated picture travels once it leaves the person who made it.
Why it matters
A version release is the point where a lab's work becomes something ordinary subscribers can use. V5 arrived with a documented jump in default resolution and style coverage, and the developer's own description framed it as a rebuild rather than a patch [2]. The naming of the point releases — down to V5.2 with its aesthetics system and zoom-out — shows how the line was then maintained in short steps, each adding a specific control rather than replacing the model wholesale [1].
