Midjourney releases the V8 alpha

Midjourney released the V8 alpha on 17 March 2026, generating images about five times faster, with a native 2K --hd mode, improved text rendering, new prompt parameters and a Grid Mode interface. Point releases followed later that year.

A faster release

On 17 March 2026, Midjourney released an alpha of V8, an early public build of the next version of its image model.[1] The most concrete change was speed: the new version generates images about five times faster than the release it follows.[1] That matters more than it might sound. Working with an image model is largely a loop — write a prompt, look at the candidates that come back, adjust the wording, run it again — and the wait between rounds sets the rhythm of that loop. Cutting generation time to roughly a fifth means more rounds fit into the same session, and an idea gets more attempts before it goes stale.

Resolution and text

Two rendering changes came with it. A new --hd mode renders natively at 2K, which makes larger output a mode you choose rather than a separate step afterwards.[1] Text rendering also improved, specifically for text placed in quotes.[1] Lettering has long been one of the harder things to ask an image model for: prompts for a sign, a label or a poster often come back with letters that look plausible at a glance and dissolve on inspection. Putting the exact words inside quotation marks is the usual way users tell the model which characters should actually appear in the picture, and the V8 alpha improves what comes back for those prompts.[1]

New controls

The alpha shipped with support for multiple aspect ratios and for the prompt parameters --chaos, --weird, --exp and --raw, plus a --q 4 mode for extra coherence.[3] These flags are typed alongside a prompt and work as dials on the generation: they do not describe what should be in the picture so much as how the model should treat the request. Aspect ratio support covers the shape of the frame, from wide to tall, which matters for anything destined for a specific slot — a banner, a phone screen, a print.

A reworked web interface

The web interface gained a Grid Mode and moved its settings into sidebars, giving controls that had been spread across the page a fixed home.[3] Relax mode was not yet supported at launch.[3]

The point releases

V8.1 followed on 14 April 2026 and V8.2 on 24 July 2026.[2] The three dates — an alpha in March, then point releases in April and July — trace a stretch of steady iteration rather than a single launch, and each later version builds on the parameters and interface that arrived with the alpha.[2]

What the release added up to

The V8 alpha arrived with its structure already defined: aspect ratios, the four prompt flags, the --q 4 mode, Grid Mode and sidebars.[1][3] The practical difference for users is measured inside the loop — faster generations, a way to ask for larger output, better handling of quoted text, and more knobs for steering a prompt.[1] For anyone reading the record later, the dates are the useful part: an alpha on 17 March 2026, V8.1 on 14 April 2026, and V8.2 on 24 July 2026.[1][2]
