Background On 4 April 2025, Midjourney opened the V7 alpha to its community.[1] An alpha is an early public test rather than a final release, so the opening gave users access while development continued. V7 was the first Midjourney model with personalization on by default.[1] That meant the personalization setting was active without users having to turn it on first, making it part of the standard starting configuration rather than an optional switch.[1]
Draft Mode Draft Mode renders at half the cost and 10 times the speed of standard rendering.[1] The release also added voice prompting on the web.[1] These features pointed in the same direction: making it easier and cheaper to try an idea before committing to a more expensive render. In image generation, cost and speed are not side details; they set how many attempts a user can make. A model that renders at half the cost can support more exploration for the same budget, and a model that renders ten times faster can return more attempts in the same time. Draft jobs could also be requested explicitly by placing --draft after the prompt.[2] Draft images rendered at lower quality than standard jobs.[2] The lower quality is the tradeoff for the lower cost and higher speed; a draft is useful for checking composition or direction, not for a final image.[2]
The web prompt bar On the web, Draft Mode changed the prompt bar itself. It switched the bar to a conversational mode that could rewrite a prompt automatically and start a new job.[2] This gave users a way to begin a new generation from a conversation-like prompt bar, with the system handling part of the prompt rewriting, instead of requiring every prompt to be edited word by word.[2]
Launch scope V7 launched in Turbo and Relax modes only.[1] The alpha therefore did not appear across every mode at once; its availability was limited to those two modes at the start.[1] That scope matters because it shaped who could try the new model and how the new features were encountered in practice.[1]
Why the release mattered The V7 alpha combined changes to defaults, cost, speed and input. Personalization moved into the default setup; Draft Mode offered a faster, cheaper render path; voice prompting and the conversational prompt bar changed how users could enter and revise prompts on the web.[1][2] Because the release was an alpha and launched in Turbo and Relax modes only, it was an early opening rather than a complete replacement of every Midjourney mode.[1] Its importance is in that combination: users could test a model with personalization already active, and they could work through a quicker draft path and a more conversational prompt bar while the model remained in testing.[1][2]
