Zhipu, the large language model developer also known as Knowledge Atlas Technology, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 8 January 2026 under the ticker 2513.[1][2]

Background

Large language models are systems trained on very large bodies of text so that they can generate and work with language. Building them takes years of expensive computing and specialised staff, so developers usually depend on outside investors long before they earn much revenue. Zhipu's backers before the listing included some of China's best-known technology companies: in 2023 it raised 2.5 billion yuan from Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan, Ant Group, Xiaomi and HongShan, and in May 2024 it took a US$400 million round led by Prosperity7 Ventures at a valuation of about US$3 billion.[1]

In April 2025 the company disclosed that it was preparing an initial public offering.[1] An IPO is the step in which a private company sells shares to outside investors and has them traded on a stock exchange. For a young, loss-making technology company it serves two purposes at once: it brings in new capital, and it gives early investors and employees a market on which they can eventually sell their holdings.

The listing

The shares began trading in Hong Kong on 8 January 2026.[1][2] Yicai reported that the offering grossed more than HK$4.3 billion, or roughly US$552 million.[2] On the first day the stock closed 12.4% above its issue price at HK$130.60 a share.[2]

Why it mattered

Wikipedia describes Zhipu as China's first major large language model company to go public.[1] Yicai went further and described it as the world's first large language model developer to go public.[2] The two descriptions differ in scope — one is about China's major model developers, the other about model developers anywhere — but they point at the same shift. Until then the best-known model companies had stayed private, funded by venture rounds and corporate investors; a listing on a public exchange exposes such a company to a different kind of scrutiny, with quarterly reporting and a share price that moves on news.

Afterwards

By August 2026 the company's market capitalisation stood at about US$62 billion, which made it China's most valuable publicly traded AI pure play.[1] A "pure play" here means a company whose business is essentially one thing — in this case AI models — rather than a large conglomerate with an AI division attached to other operations. That valuation therefore says something about how public markets were pricing a stand-alone model developer, not just about Zhipu itself.
