Overview

Eddie Wu is a co-founder of Alibaba Group and has been the group's chief executive officer and a director since September 2023. He is also an Alibaba Partner.[1] His record at the company runs through payments, advertising, search, mobile and health, mostly in technical leadership roles before he took the top executive job.

Education

He graduated from the College of Information Engineering at Zhejiang University of Technology in June 1996.[1]

Technical director at the founding

Alibaba was founded in 1999, and Wu was technical director at the time.[1] In a company that has just been set up, the technical director is the person responsible for the engineering side of the product: what gets built, how it is built, and who builds it. Holding that role at the founding places him among the small group that started the company, and it is the basis on which he is described today as a co-founder.[1]

Alipay

In December 2004 he became chief technology officer of Alipay.[1] A chief technology officer heads the engineering organisation: setting technical direction, owning the reliability of systems that customers depend on, and hiring and organising engineers. Alipay is a payments service, a category in which reliability and security requirements are unusually strict, because what moves through the systems is money.

Alimama

From November 2005 he was head of the Alimama business, and from December 2007 he served as Alimama's general manager.[1] Alimama is Alibaba's marketing and advertising operation, which sells advertising space across the group's shopping platforms. Moving from a technology role to running a business unit changes the job: the questions become which customers to serve, how the product is priced and sold, and how a team is built around a revenue target rather than a system.

Taobao, search, advertising and mobile

In September 2008 he became chief technology officer of Taobao, Alibaba's consumer shopping site.[1] In October 2011 he took charge of Alibaba Group's search, advertising and mobile business.[1] Search and advertising are the systems that decide which products a shopper sees and how merchants pay for visibility; mobile refers to the phone-based versions of those services. Placing the three under one leader treats them as a connected set of capabilities rather than three separate projects.

Alibaba Health and Yuanjing Capital

He was chairman of Alibaba Health from April 2015 to March 2020.[1] In August 2015 he founded Yuanjing Capital.[1] The two commitments ran in parallel for almost five years, and that stretch is where his career widened from operating roles inside Alibaba to work of his own.

Chief executive

Since September 2023 he has been Alibaba Group's chief executive officer and a director.[1] The post puts him in charge of the group as a whole, with co-founder status and the Partner designation behind him.[1]

What the record shows

Read as a sequence, the dates trace a single line: engineering leadership at a company being founded in 1999, then chief technology officer roles at a payments service and at a shopping site, then a business role in advertising, then a portfolio spanning search, advertising and mobile, then a chairmanship and a firm of his own, and finally the group's chief executive office.[1] Each step is a different kind of responsibility — building systems, running a product line, carrying revenue, overseeing a board, starting an organisation — and the later ones rest on the earlier ones.
