A robot for the home
NEO Gamma is a humanoid robot built for domestic settings, introduced by 1X on 21 February 2025. The company described it as the next generation of home humanoids designed and engineered by 1X.[4] It was not the company's only machine: when 1X later opened orders for its NEO robot, the launch material listed NEO Gamma among the earlier models that NEO succeeds.[1]
A learned whole-body controller
1X's public technical claims centred on movement. The company said Gamma's whole-body controller runs at 100Hz — the control loop refreshes a hundred times a second — and is learned with reinforcement learning from human motion capture data.[4] A controller updating at that rate is making a decision about the whole body, legs, arms and posture included, roughly every ten milliseconds, which is fast enough to adjust a step while walking. Reinforcement learning here means training the controller by having it attempt movements repeatedly and rewarding the attempts that produce the desired result; learning one such controller rather than scripting every joint angle by hand is what makes it practical to cover many movements with a single policy. Using motion capture of people as the learning signal is what keeps the result close to human movement. According to 1X, the combination lets NEO walk with a natural human gait and arm swings, squat to pick things up, and sit in chairs.[4]
1X also said the Gamma design opened the door to internal home testing, which it described as a first step toward fully autonomous humanoids.[4] In other words, the generation was not only a hardware revision: it moved testing out of the laboratory and into places where people actually live.
From demonstration to the living room
A September 2025 report stated that NEO Gamma could make coffee, do laundry and vacuum, and that 1X planned to deploy hundreds to thousands of units to homes by the end of 2025 for early testing.[2] The same report said the founder described Gamma as having recently left the laboratory while still being a long way from commercialisation.[2] Read together, the two statements define this stage fairly precisely: the robot could already carry out a number of household tasks, but the distance between a working demonstration and a product was still large.
Household tasks continued to be taught in real homes. An item in 1X's news feed dated 25 June 2026 says the 1X AI team and NVIDIA's GEAR Lab spent a week in employees' homes teaching NEO Gamma to do the dishes.[3] Dishes are a useful illustration of why homes are hard: the objects vary from one sink to the next, water and fragile surfaces are involved, and the same task has to be repeated reliably rather than performed once for a camera.
Where it sits in the line-up
On the timeline, Gamma sits between demonstration and product. It appeared in February 2025 as a new generation of home humanoid[4]; reporting later that year placed it in homes for early testing[2]; and when the company offered its NEO robot for order, Gamma became the predecessor that model succeeds.[1] Its role was to carry 1X's humanoid from the laboratory into occupied homes, and to accumulate operating experience in domestic settings along the way.[3][4]
