What the Go2 is

The Go2 is a quadruped robot — usually called a robot dog — made by Unitree Robotics and released in July 2023. Its starting price was 9,997 yuan, a figure Unitree described as the first time pricing in the category had gone below 10,000 yuan.^[3] The claim is about a threshold rather than a capability. A four-legged machine under ten thousand yuan stops being something only a well-funded laboratory can buy, and that changes who the product is for.

The Go2 is not a single machine but a family. Unitree lists AIR, PRO, X and EDU versions, which differ in speed, payload and price.^[1]

Body, speed and joints

On the Go2 specification page, Unitree gives standing dimensions of 70 x 31 x 40 cm and crouching dimensions of 76 x 31 x 20 cm, with a weight of about 15 kg including the battery.^[1] Crouching drops the body from 40 cm to 20 cm and adds 6 cm of length.

Speed is where the configurations separate most clearly: 0 to 2.5 m/s for AIR, 0 to 3.5 m/s for PRO, and 0 to 3.7 m/s for X and EDU, with a maximum of about 5 m/s measured in the lab.^[1] The same page lists a peak joint torque of about 45 N·m across 12 knee joint motors.^[1] For a machine of this size, those numbers describe a robot that walks at a brisk pace and can push itself briefly faster, rather than one built for sustained high speed.

Sensing

The Go2 carries Unitree's own 4D LiDAR, the L2, which the specification page describes as giving 360° x 96° hemispherical recognition with a minimum detection distance of 0.05 m.^[1] Five centimetres is close enough that the robot can register objects almost touching its body, which matters when it walks indoors or through cluttered space.

Shanghai Securities News reported that the Go2 uses a 4D LiDAR with a 200% improvement in perception, and that the robot supports intelligent following and autonomous obstacle avoidance.^[2] Following is the function that turns a walking platform into something a person can use without a controller: the machine keeps a target in view and tracks it, steering around whatever it meets on the way.

Payload and battery life

Payload is listed at about 7 kg for AIR and about 8 kg for the other configurations, with maxima of 10 to 12 kg.^[1] Endurance depends on which pack is fitted: about 1 to 2 hours on the standard 8000 mAh battery and about 2 to 4 hours on the 15000 mAh long-endurance pack.^[1] The two figures pull against each other, since carrying more weight and running longer both draw on the same power budget, so the choice of configuration comes down to which one a buyer needs.

Prices

Outside China, Unitree lists US$1,600 for AIR, US$2,800 for PRO and US$4,500 for X, with EDU sold through its sales channel rather than at a fixed published price.^[1] In China, the starting price announced at release was 9,997 yuan.^[3]

Where it sits

Splitting one robot into several configurations and separating them by speed and payload is a common pattern in consumer hardware: the entry version carries the lowest price, while the higher versions take on heavier work. What stands out in the Go2's own specification sheet is where the emphasis was placed — a price under ten thousand yuan at the bottom of the range, and a self-developed LiDAR rather than a bought-in sensor at the top of the feature list.
