Fourier Intelligence

Fourier is a Shanghai robotics company founded in 2015 by Gu Jie. It began with rehabilitation robots and exoskeletons, then released the GR-1, GR-2 and GR-3 full-size humanoid robots in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

What Fourier is

Fourier is a robotics company founded in 2015 and headquartered in Shanghai [1][2]. Its products fall into two groups: rehabilitation robots used by hospitals, care homes and rehabilitation institutions, and a line of full-size humanoid robots sold under the GR name.

Origins and early products

Fourier was founded by Gu Jie [2][3]. Its first product, released in 2016, was an upper-limb rehabilitation robot [1][3]. Machines of this kind take over part of the weight of a limb so that a patient can repeat a movement many times, which lets a therapist raise the amount of practice without carrying the patient through every repetition by hand.

In 2017 the company released the X1, a lower-limb exoskeleton that it described as China's first commercialised lower-limb exoskeleton [1][3]. An exoskeleton is worn on the body and drives the joints from the outside, so a person whose legs are weak can still stand and take steps.

Turning to humanoid robots

Fourier started a general-purpose humanoid robot project in 2019 [1][2], and built a first-generation humanoid prototype in 2022 [1]. In 2023 it officially released GR-1, its first full-size humanoid, and began mass production of the machine [1][2]. A second generation, GR-2, followed in 2024, again released and put into mass production [1][2].

In 2025 the company released the third-generation GR-3 series and started mass production [1]. Alongside it, Fourier published an open-source humanoid called Fourier N1 and a dataset named Fourier ActionNet [1]. In robotics, a dataset of this kind is recorded motion and sensor data used to train and test control software; releasing it publicly means developers outside the company can work with the same material as its own engineers.

Reach

Fourier says it serves more than 2,000 institutions and hospitals in over 40 countries and regions [1]. People's Daily reported that the company's rehabilitation robots had served more than 3,000 medical and elderly-care institutions in over 40 countries and regions [2]. The same outlet reported that Fourier had delivered more than 10,000 robots in total by the end of the first quarter of 2025, and that its delivery target for 2025 was several thousand units [2][3].

Funding

In January 2025 Fourier completed a Series E round of nearly 800 million yuan [2][3]. Investors named in reports on the round included Guoxin Investment, Pudong Venture Capital, Zhangjiang Venture Capital, Zhangke Yaokun Fund, Prosperity7 and Junshan Capital [2][3].

Where it sits

Fourier's history runs from a single rehabilitation device to a full-size humanoid line: an upper-limb rehabilitation robot in 2016, the X1 lower-limb exoskeleton in 2017, a humanoid project started in 2019, a first-generation prototype in 2022, and then GR-1, GR-2 and GR-3 in three consecutive years [1][2][3]. One feature of the humanoid programme is how the machines were announced: each GR generation was released together with the start of mass production, rather than as a one-off demonstration [1][2]. The rehabilitation business, meanwhile, is the part of the company with a published customer base measured in thousands of institutions and a cumulative delivery count above 10,000 robots [1][2].
