Alibaba leads a US$1 billion round in Moonshot AI

In February 2024 Alibaba led a US$1 billion funding round in Moonshot AI at a US$2.5 billion valuation, roughly eight times the startup's earlier valuation and, by reporting at the time, the largest single round for a Chinese AI startup.

A company less than a year old

Moonshot AI was founded in March 2023 by Yang Zhilin, Zhou Xinyu and Wu Yuxin[1]. Its first round raised US$60 million at a valuation of about US$300 million[1]. A funding round is a single fundraising event in which a company sells newly issued shares to investors, and the valuation is the price those shares imply for the whole company at that moment. A few hundred million dollars for a company only months old is a high starting point, and it became the baseline against which the next round was measured.

February 2024: the US$1 billion round

In February 2024, Alibaba led a US$1 billion funding round in Moonshot AI at a valuation of US$2.5 billion[1][2]. The round was led by Alibaba Group alongside the existing backer Monolith Management[2].

The lead investor's role goes beyond writing the largest cheque. The lead usually negotiates the terms and the valuation, and often ends up with a board seat, so who leads a round shapes how much say that investor has in the company afterwards. That is why the identity of the lead is read as closely as the size of the cheque.

Wikipedia's account of the deal reports that Alibaba acquired a 36% stake[1]. A stake is an ownership share: 36% means a little more than a third of the company's equity belongs to Alibaba. That is more than a claim on future profits; it carries weight in major decisions.

How big the jump was

Measured against the earlier round, the deal raised Moonshot's valuation about eightfold, from roughly US$300 million to some US$2.5 billion[2]. Reporting on 27 February 2024 called it the largest single financing round for a Chinese AI startup[2].

A single round is a snapshot: it records what one group of investors was willing to pay on one day, not what the company will be worth later. But in a young industry it is the snapshot everyone uses, because it is public, comparable and dated. The gap between the initial round and this one is what makes the deal a reference point: the same company, less than a year apart, priced at roughly eight times as much.

What came next

In August 2024, Tencent and Gaorong Capital joined a US$300 million round that valued Moonshot at US$3.3 billion[1]. A very large round followed within months by another at a higher valuation is a familiar rhythm in AI: building and running large models is capital-intensive, and investors compete to hold a position in the small number of companies they expect to matter. Each new round also resets the reference price for the next one.

Why it is remembered

The February 2024 deal marks a particular moment in Chinese AI financing. A company founded in March 2023 raised US$1 billion in a single round at a US$2.5 billion valuation, with Alibaba leading and acquiring a reported 36% stake, and with an existing backer staying in[1][2]. Reporting at the time treated the size of the round as the story[2].

The details also show how concentrated the money can be. When one investor holds a stake of that size, the company's room to manoeuvre, over further fundraising, over strategy and over who sits on the board, is shaped by that relationship. And because the valuation rose about eightfold between the first round and this one[2], the deal became the number against which later rounds were compared.
