Moonshot AI closes a round at a US$35 billion valuation

On 30 July 2026 Moonshot AI closed a round at a US$35 billion valuation, raising about US$3.5 billion two weeks after releasing Kimi K3 — the latest step in a climb from a US$3.8 billion pre-money valuation in October 2025.

An amber moon rises over stacked investment blocks.

Background

Moonshot AI, the Chinese developer behind the Kimi model line, raised capital several times at rising valuations in the year before its July 2026 round [2][3].

In October 2025 the company was reportedly nearing a round of about US$600 million led by IDG Capital, at a US$3.8 billion pre-money valuation [1]. A pre-money valuation is the value assigned to a company just before new money enters; adding the new investment on top gives the post-money figure.

In May 2026, TechCrunch reported a US$2 billion raise at a US$20 billion valuation [1][2]. The Standard reported the same month that the round would be led by Meituan's venture arm Long-Z Investments [2]. The lead investor in such a round usually negotiates the terms and often puts in the largest single cheque.

Revenue was reported in more than one way. Wikipedia put annual recurring revenue at US$200–300 million in April 2026 [1][2]. Annual recurring revenue is the part of subscription revenue expected to repeat over a year, a measure software and API businesses use to describe growth. TechNode, by contrast, reported that ARR rose from US$100 million in March 2026 to US$300 million in June 2026 [4].

The round

On 30 July 2026 Moonshot AI closed a funding round at a US$35 billion valuation [1][4]. TechNode reported the round raised about US$3.5 billion, roughly double the top of the company's initial US$1–2 billion target [4].

The close came two weeks after the release of Kimi K3 on 16 July 2026 [1][3].

The sequence

Read side by side, the reports trace a steep climb. The October 2025 figure was a US$3.8 billion pre-money valuation [1]; the May 2026 figure was US$20 billion [1][2]; by 30 July 2026 the company closed at US$35 billion [1][4]. The reported size of the rounds grew as well, from about US$600 million [1] to US$2 billion [1][2] to about US$3.5 billion [4].

Valuation and cash

The July numbers describe two different things. About US$3.5 billion is the money raised; US$35 billion is the valuation placed on the whole company [1][4]. A valuation is a price agreed between a company and its investors for the business as a whole. It is not cash the company receives, and it is reset with each new round rather than traded continuously as a share price is.

Reported and closed

Not every figure describes the same event. The May 2026 number was a press report of a raise [1][2], while the July 2026 number describes a round the company had closed [1][4]. Before a round closes, its size and price can still change as terms are negotiated, which is why early reports and final figures often differ. The reported revenue figures differ in coverage too: one is a range for a single month [1][2], the other a two-point series across three months [4].

What comes next

TechNode reported that the company was preparing another private round at up to US$50 billion ahead of a potential Hong Kong listing [4]. A listing would mean shares trade on a public exchange rather than being sold in private placements, and a further private round beforehand would let investors buy in at a set price ahead of that step.
